Valikoimaan kuuluu kylläkin modernisoitu versio Bournville Old Jamaica, joka on tummaan suklaaseen tehty rommi-rusina. No mutta palataanpa siihen pääsiäiseen.

Perinteinen pitkäperjantain herkku on hot-cross-bun.

Blog readers seem to be interested in Finnish and English traditions. So what is the better time than have a peak into English and Finnish Easter traditions. In Finland we have one main religion, Evangelic-Lutheran, which mostly guides the traditions we have, in addition to many traditions which have pagan origin. On the other hand in England traditions vary a lot depending on the religion and family. Some Easter traditions are very localized and can be found only in one village or town.

Egg hunt is popular pastime in Britain over the Easter. Children, and why not adults too, will search for Easter eggs, hidden around the house and garden, with their little egg baskets. I have heard that most people seem to think, the sweeter the eggs are, the better. I think the most well known English Easter egg, must be Cadbury Cream Egg, with creamy oozy filling, which looks like egg. In Finland we don’t have Easter egg hunt, but we do love our Easter eggs. Finnish traditional Easter Egg is Fazer Mignon. It is almond nougat filling in real egg shell. It was introduced to the market in 1896. It is very sweet and rich. Easter eggs with little toys and trinkets are also popular in Finland, but I prefer the chocolate filled eggs, like little mini chocolate eggs, which look like real birds eggs. We can also get the Cadbury cream eggs these days, which is nice, because hubby loves to have them for Easter. Cream egg was originally invented in 1923, however the modern version as we know was introduced in 1963. As far as I understand the ingredients of the original filling are unknown.

Cadbury is, like many other English chocolate factories, very old. It started already in the beginning of 1800’s, by making hot chocolate, but soon moving on to other chocolate products. First chocolate eggs Cadbury made already in 1870’s, however they had different sweetie filling, not cream egg filling. These days Cadbury makes many popular chocolate treats, like traditional chocolate bar Dairy Milk, leafy Flake and biscuit filled Fingers. I have to say that they almost match our Finish Fazer chocolate. Hubby’s favourite used to be rum-raisin milk chocolate Old Jamaica, however that is discontinued. Allthough there is new version Bournville Old Jamaica, which is dark chocolate rum-raisin. But let’s go back to Easter.

Traditional Good Friday treat in Britain is hot cross bun. They are spiced buns with raisins, with cross on top. They are eaten hot and usually thickly buttered. While enjoying the buns, you can read Easter post cards, which were very popular before. But I think just like here in Finland, they are not so popular in Britain either. The must-have Finnish Easter dish however is mämmi. We forgot to buy mämmi this year, but I’m sure you can imagine it if I say it’s dark brown and gooey, a bit like poop. Yeah, doesn’t sound appetizing, but it actually has quite sweet, tangy taste. It’s made of water, malt, rye flour and little bit of salt. It takes one to two days to make mämmi, so most people prefer to buy it ready-made. You warm it up or eat it cold with sugar and cream. I never liked it as a kid, but I have learned to like it, and hubby likes it too. Other well-known Easter food in Finland is pasha. Pasha is sweet and sour desert, made with raisins and sour-milk products. It comes from the Orthodox tradition.

Hubby remembers Easter Garden tradition from his childhood. English Easter Garden has little tomb with a cave and stone, three crosses, made of wooden sticks and some sort of grass growing on it. I don’t know what sort of grass they used in those gardens, but looks like modern versions can have anything from herbs to barley and oat or succulents. In Finland we have similar easter grass tradition called “rairuoho”. Lolium seeds are sown on a tray about week before Easter, so that they can grow into bushy little grass. Easter grass is usually decorated with little chicks, Easter bunnies and easter eggs. I don’t have a photo of that, because I always forget to sow them. I suppose you can call that a sort of tradition too. Perhaps the British Easter Garden is also made with lolium. Comment below if you have knowledge about this. Other Finnish tradition is to collect the pussy willows, decorate them with colourful papers and feathers and display them at the easter table. Usually on Palm Sunday little kids are dressed as Easter witches and go from door to door, with the decorated pussy willow branches. They wish people good fortune and health for the coming year and hand over the branch. And people give them sweeties for reward. This activity is called “virpominen”. Virpominen also includes little poem or chant, most traditional is “Virvon varvon, tuoreeks, terveeks, tulevaks vuodeks. Vitsa sulle, palkka mulle.” Which translates something like “Swish swish, fresh and healthy for upcoming year. Branch for you, reward for me”.

The crown jewel of the Easter is of course the Easter meal, which in England is usually lamb roast. In some places turkey, ham or other meats can be served instead. Lamb roast is served with boiled vegetables, roasted potatoes and mint sauce. In Finland I don’t really remember any particular Easter meals. Atleast in our family it was always regular everyday food, and varied depending what happened to be on the menu that day. So, we often choose the English way, if we can find nice pieces of lamb. Lamb is not very commonly available here, and it is often quite expensive too. Unfortunately we were not able to get lamb from our neighbours this year, but we found some from shop.

Tasetti- eli perunanarsissit “Bridal crown” ovat suosikkejani pääsiäiskukista.
