Yksi tavallisimmista kysymyksist\u00e4 on ett\u00e4 mit\u00e4 siell\u00e4 sy\u00f6d\u00e4\u00e4n jouluna. Englantilaisista jouluperinteist\u00e4 ja -ruuista <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evildressmaker.com\/?p=10822\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">olen kertoillut aikaisemmin t\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4<\/a>. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa ajattelin kertoa muutamista muista englantilaisista herkuista joita meill\u00e4 sy\u00f6d\u00e4\u00e4n melko s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6llisesti. Osasta olen saattanut kertoilla joskus aiemminkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S\u00e4ilykkeet ja soosit<\/strong><br>Englannissa on useita suomalaisesta perinteest\u00e4 hiukan poikkeavia s\u00e4ilykkeit\u00e4. Niiss\u00e4 maistuu vahvana yrtit, mallasetikka ja umaami., vaikka lihaa niiss\u00e4 ei ole. T\u00e4llaisia tuotteita ovat mm. Mintsauce (minttukastike), Piccalilli (er\u00e4\u00e4nlainen sinappinen kasviss\u00e4ilyke) ja Branston Pickle. Minttukastikkeessa on mallasetikkaa ja sit\u00e4 voi lis\u00e4t\u00e4 siihen viel\u00e4 tarjoiluvaiheessa lis\u00e4\u00e4. Minttukastiketta sivell\u00e4\u00e4n lammaspaistin p\u00e4\u00e4lle. Piccalilliss\u00e4 on sinapin ja kurkuman lis\u00e4ksi kukkakaalia, sipulia ja cocktailkurkkua ja sit\u00e4 tarjoillaan kylmien liharuokien kanssa. Branston pickle on er\u00e4\u00e4nlaista chutney-tyyppist\u00e4 makeahkoa etikkas\u00e4ilykett\u00e4. Siin\u00e4 on lanttua, porkkanaa ja kukkakaalia, makeassa etikka-tomaatti-omenakastikkeessa. Pickle on erityisen hyv\u00e4\u00e4 englantilaisen vintage-cheddarin kanssa. Piccalillist\u00e4 en liiemmin v\u00e4lit\u00e4, mutta pickle-cheese-sandwitch on oikein hyv\u00e4\u00e4. <br>Cheddar-juusto on muuten alunperin kotoisin Cheddarista jossa juustoja kypsytet\u00e4\u00e4n edelleen perinteisesti Cheddar Gorgen luolassa. Cheddar Gorgeen voit tutustua vaikka <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evildressmaker.com\/?p=9881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lukemalla vierailustamme luoliin<\/a>. Aiemmin mainittu mallasetikka on tummaa etikkaa, jota voi k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 muiden etikoiden tapaan s\u00e4il\u00f6nt\u00e4\u00e4n ja marinadeihin. Englantilaiset pirskottavat sit\u00e4 fish&amp;chips annoksen p\u00e4\u00e4lle. Suomesta sit\u00e4 ei valitettavasti en\u00e4\u00e4 saa nyt kun Prisma lopetti Tesco-tuotteiden myymisen, joten joudumme jatkossa tilaamaan sit\u00e4, kuten s\u00e4ilykkeit\u00e4kin ulkomailta. Worchestershire-kastike on oikeastaan ainoa jota l\u00f6ytyy Suomestakin. Se on anjoviksesta ja mausteista fermentoimalla tehty maustekastike. Meill\u00e4 sit\u00e4 k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n mm. lihapullataikinan mausteena. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>English sandwiches<\/strong><br>Englantilaisissa voileiviss\u00e4 on aina kaksi leiv\u00e4nsiivua, yleens\u00e4 vaaleaa tai tummaa paahtoleip\u00e4\u00e4, joiden v\u00e4liss\u00e4 ovat t\u00e4ytteet. T\u00e4ytteiss\u00e4 on usein jonkinlaisia tahnoja tai pikkeli\u00e4. Niiss\u00e4 voi olla my\u00f6s kurkunsiivuja, leikkeleit\u00e4, salaatinsuikaleita, vintage cheddaria, majoneesia tai tomaatinsiivuja. Tyypillinen englantilainen voileip\u00e4 on kurkku-juustot\u00e4ytteinen tai l\u00e4mmin juusto-kinkku. Kaupoista voi ostaa purkin valmista voileip\u00e4tahnaa, kaikissa mahdollisissa mauisssa. Voileiviss\u00e4 voi olla t\u00e4ytteen\u00e4 l\u00e4hes mit\u00e4 hyv\u00e4ns\u00e4 kuten ranskalaisia tai perunalastuja. Usein voileipi\u00e4 tarjotaan lounaalla ja kello viiden teell\u00e4.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leivonnaiset<\/strong><br>Tyypillisi\u00e4 englantilaisia leivonnaisia ovat skonssit, hot-cross-buns, crumpetit ja Victoria sponge cake. Skonssit, joista <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evildressmaker.com\/?p=9671\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kirjoittelin t\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4<\/a>, ovat pullia jotka sy\u00f6d\u00e4\u00e4n hillon ja hyydytetyn kerman kanssa, kun taas p\u00e4\u00e4si\u00e4isen\u00e4 sy\u00f6t\u00e4v\u00e4t hot-cross rusinapullat ovat appelsiinisia, mausteisia ja aprikoosihillolla glaseerattuja. Crumpetit ovat er\u00e4\u00e4nlaisia suolaisia aamiaispannukakkuja. Ne ovat muotin sis\u00e4ll\u00e4 paistettuja paksuja leivonnaisia joissa taikina kuplii kypsyess\u00e4\u00e4n ja muodostaa reiki\u00e4. Crumpetit sy\u00f6d\u00e4\u00e4n paahdettuna ja runsaalla voilla voideltuna. Victoria sponge cake leivotaan tavallisen sokerikakun reseptill\u00e4, halkaistaan ja t\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n mansikkahillolla ja kermavaahdolla. P\u00e4\u00e4lle ripotellaan tomusokeria. Joulukakku on kuorrutettu kuivakakku, kerroin siit\u00e4 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.evildressmaker.com\/?p=14065\" target=\"_blank\">aiemmin t\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4<\/a>. Jouluvanukas on h\u00f6yryss\u00e4 kypsennetty hedelm\u00e4inen ja alkoholilla kyll\u00e4stetty kakku, joka sy\u00f6d\u00e4\u00e4n l\u00e4mpim\u00e4n\u00e4, kerman kera.  Maku on vahvan mausteinen ja alkoholinen. Vanukkaan voisi halutessaan my\u00f6s liekitt\u00e4\u00e4. Mince pies ovat saman tyyppisi\u00e4 kuin Fazerin pienet marjapiirakat. Raikkaaseen makeaan marjahilloon tottuneille mince pien mausteinen hedelm\u00e4t\u00e4yte voi olla pettymys. Se vaatii totuttelua, kuten monet muutkin brittil\u00e4iset herkut. Niiden makumaailma on paljon t\u00e4ytel\u00e4isempi, mausteisempi ja vahvempi. Lihaa niiss\u00e4 ei kuitenkaan ole vaikka nimi siihen viittaakin. Englantilaisissa leivonnaisissa mausteita ja makuja on paljon, joten yksitt\u00e4ist\u00e4 makua on joskus vaikea erottaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Makkarat, nakkirullat ja black pudding<\/strong><br>Englantilaiset makkarat eroavat selv\u00e4sti suomalaisista koska ne ovat l\u00e4hes poikkeuksetta raakamakkaroita ja todella mausteisia. Bratwursti ja maustetut raakamakkarat, kuten HK:n Luigi,  ovat l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 englantilaisia makkaroita. Tyypillisesti englantilaisissa makkaroissa on salviaa, persiljaa, meiramia, timjamia, muskottia ja pippuria. Is\u00e4nn\u00e4n suosikki on Lincolnshire-makkara jossa on karkeaksi hakattua porsaanlihaa, salviaa, suolaa ja pippuria, niinp\u00e4 kun is\u00e4nt\u00e4 tekee englantilaisia sausagerolls (nakkirullia eli nakkipiiloja) h\u00e4n tekee ne siskonmakkaroista mutta lis\u00e4\u00e4 makkaraseokseen paljon salviaa. Englannissa voi kaupoista ostaa ns. sausage meat, eli makkaramassaa.  Suomessa ainoa vastaava tuote ovat siskonmakkarat, jotka ovat mietoa raakaa makkaramassaa. Suomalaisille ja etenkin tamperelaisille black pudding on tuttu juttu. Se on nimitt\u00e4in melko sama kuin mustamakkara. Erotuksena mustamakkaraan, black pudding on yleens\u00e4 paksu makkara josta leikataan noin 1,5 cm siivuja jotka paistetaan nopeasti pannulla. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Snacksit ja muut<\/strong><br>Englantilaisesta sipsivalikoimasta l\u00f6ytyy kaikenlaista j\u00e4nnitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 kuten is\u00e4nn\u00e4n suosikki cheese&amp;onion ja oma suosikkini prawn cocktail. Makeisista pid\u00e4n erityisesti chocolate orangesta joka on appelsiinin muotoinen appelsiinin makuinen suklaapallura. Kun sen m\u00e4j\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 p\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4n pohja edell\u00e4, se hajoaa ohuiksi suklaaviipaleiksi. Englannista l\u00f6ytyy my\u00f6s banaanijuomajauhetta joka on ihanaa vaikka kes\u00e4juomana kylm\u00e4\u00e4n maitoon sekoitettuna. Suklaa-appelsiinej\u00e4 myyd\u00e4\u00e4n  esim Verkkokaupassa ja Normalissa. P\u00e4\u00e4si\u00e4isen aikaan meill\u00e4 on usein herkkuna Cadbury&#8217;s cream eggs, jotka ovat valuvalla sokeri-munanvalkuaissekoituksella t\u00e4ytettyj\u00e4 suklaakonvehteja. Niit\u00e4 saa my\u00f6s toisinaan Verkkokaupasta, mutta usein joudumme tilaamaan niit\u00e4kin ulkomailta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Englannissa on paljon muitakin herkkuja joita Suomesta ei saa. Valitettavasti monet niist\u00e4 ovat niin nopeasti pilaantuvia ett\u00e4 niit\u00e4 ei ole mahdollista tilata netin kautta. T\u00e4llaisia ihanuuksia on mm. Cornish pasty, syd\u00e4nsimpukat (is\u00e4nn\u00e4n herkku), rantakotiloita (is\u00e4nn\u00e4n herkku) ja hyydytetty kerma. Hyydytetty\u00e4 kermaa ja Cornwallin pasteijaa voimme sent\u00e4\u00e4n tehd\u00e4 itse. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"214\" height=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.evildressmaker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/inenglish.gif?resize=214%2C100\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7004\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Every now and then, people ask me about English food. One of the most common questions I get is what they eat at Christmas. I&#8217;ve talked about English (and Finnish) <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.evildressmaker.com\/?p=10822\" target=\"_blank\">Christmas traditions and food here<\/a>. This time I thought I&#8217;d tell you about some other English treats that we eat quite regularly. Some of these I might have told about before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preserves and sauces<\/strong><br>In England, there are a number of canned foods that are slightly different from the Finnish tradition. They have a strong taste of herbs, malt vinegar and umami, even though there is no meat in them. These include mint sauce, piccalilli (a type of mustardy vegetable preserve) and Branston pickle. Mint sauce contains malt vinegar and can be added at the serving stage. The mint sauce is spread on top of the lamb roast. Piccalilli has cauliflower, cocktail onion and ghergin in addition to mustard and turmeric and is served with cold meat dishes. Branston pickle is a kind of chutney-type sweet vinegar preserve. It has swede, carrots and cauliflower in a sweet vinegar, tomato and apple sauce. The pickle is particularly good with a vintage English cheddar. I don&#8217;t care much for piccalilli, but pickle-cheese-sandwitches are very good.<br>By the way, cheddar cheese originates in Cheddar, where the cheese is still traditionally matured in the Cheddar Gorge cave. The malt vinegar mentioned earlier is a dark vinegar that can be used like other vinegars for preserves and marinades. The English sprinkle it on their fish and chips meal. Unfortunately, it is no longer available in Finland now that Prisma has stopped selling Tesco products. So we will have to order it, like canned goods, from abroad. Worchestershire sauce is really the only one you can get in Finland. It&#8217;s a spicy sauce made by fermenting anchovies and spices. We use it as a seasoning for meatball dough, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>English sandwiches<\/strong><br>English sandwiches always have two slices of bread, usually light or dark toast, with fillings in between. The fillings often include some kind of paste or pickle. They may also have slices of cucumber, cold meat cuts, lettuce, vintage cheddar or tomato. A typical English sandwich is a cucumber and cheese sandwich or a warm cheese and ham sandwich. You can buy a jar of ready-made sandwich paste in the shops, in all imaginable flavours. Sandwiches can be filled with almost anything, such as chips or crisps. Sandwiches are often served at lunch and tea time.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pastry<\/strong><br>Typical English pastries include scones, hot-cross buns, crumpets and Victoria sponge cake. Scones, which <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.evildressmaker.com\/?p=9671\" target=\"_blank\">I wrote about here<\/a>,  are buns eaten with jam and clotted cream, while hot-cross buns are flavoured with orange, raisins and spices and glazed with apricot jam. They are served at Easter. Crumpets are a type of savoury breakfast pancake. They are thick pastries baked in a mould where the dough bubbles as it cooks, forming holes. Crumpets are eaten toasted and topped with butter. Victoria sponge cake is baked according to the recipe for a regular sugar cake, cut in half and filled with strawberry jam and whipped cream. Sprinkled with icing sugar. The Christmas cake is a frosted dry cake, I <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.evildressmaker.com\/?p=14065\" target=\"_blank\">mentioned it here earlier<\/a>. Christmas pudding is a steamed, fruity cake, saturated with alcohol and eaten warm, with cream. The flavour is strongly spicy and alcoholic. The pudding could also be flamed if desired. Mince pies are similar to Finnish Fazer&#8217;s small berry pies. For those used to fresh sweet berry jam, the spicy fruit filling of the mince pies may be a disappointment. Like many other British delicacies, it takes some getting used to. Their flavours are much richer, spicier and stronger. However, there is no meat in them, despite the name. There are so many spices and flavours in English pastries that it is sometimes difficult to identify a single flavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sausages, sausage rolls and black pudding<\/strong><br>English sausages are very different from Finnish sausages because they are usually raw and very spicy. Bratwurst and spiced raw sausages, such as HK&#8217;s Luigi, are the closest thing to English sausages. Typically, English sausages contain sage, parsley, marjoram, thyme, nutmeg and pepper. Hubby&#8217;s favourite is the Lincolnshire sausage with coarsely chopped pork, sage, salt and pepper, so when he makes English sausage rolls he makes them from &#8220;siskonmakkara&#8221; (Finnish mild raw sausage) but adds lots of sage to the sausage mix. In England you can buy sausage meat in the shops. In Finland, the only similar product is &#8220;siskonmakkara&#8221;. Finns, especially those from Tampere region, are familiar with black pudding. It is, in fact, quite similar to local &#8220;mustamakkara&#8221;. Unlike Finnish mustamakkara, black pudding is usually a thick sausage cut into slices of about 1,5 cm thick and quickly fried in a pan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Snacks and others<\/strong><br>The English chips menu has all sorts of exciting things like the host&#8217;s favourite cheese&amp;onion and my personal favourite, the prawn cocktail. For sweets I particularly like the chocolate orange which is an orange shaped orange flavoured chocolate ball. When you smash it on the table, bottom first, it breaks up into thin slices of chocolate. There is also a banana drink powder in England which is delicious as a summer drink mixed with cold milk. Chocolate-orange is often sold in Normal and Finnish Verkkokauppa. During Easter time we often have Cadbury&#8217;s cream eggs, which are chocolates filled with creamy sugar-eggwhite mix. Sometimes we can get them from Verkkokauppa, but most of the time we have order from abroad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many other treats in England, which you can&#8217;t get here. Unfortunately they are usually spoiled very quickly, so it&#8217;s not possible to ordernthem online either. Some of these are Cornish pasty, cockles (hubby&#8217;s treat), periwinkles and clotted cream.
