Viime vuoden joulukalenterissa minulta toivottiin ohjetta k\u00e4pym\u00e4isten villatupsujen<\/a> tekoon. Olen yritt\u00e4nyt siit\u00e4 l\u00e4htien selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 miten tupsut kannattaisi valmistaa. Lopputulos ei kuitenkaan ole sielt\u00e4 parhaimmasta p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4. Testasin t\u00e4t\u00e4 kietomalla tupsut ensin sormeni ymp\u00e4ri. Se tuntui toimivan , mutta oli v\u00e4h\u00e4n hankalaa. Sitten leikkasin pahvista levyn jonka ymp\u00e4ri kiedoin lankaa samoin kuin sormen ymp\u00e4ri. In last year’s Christmas calendar, I was asked for instructions on how to make pinecone-like wool pompom<\/a> <\/a>tassels<\/a>. Since then I have been trying to figure out how to make the tassels. But the end result is not the best. But I guess the best thing to do is to explain why not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can see by examining the tassel that it has a braided core and a spiral of small tassels is tightly wound around it. Each tassel has about 10 yarn loops and each tassel forms a scaly section on the pompom. At the base of each small tassel is a thin metal wire which appears above every other tassel and below every other tassel. And that’s pretty much the end of my understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was trying to figure out how to make a tight, coherent row of tiny tassels without cutting the thread in between, and to understand why the metal thread only shows on one side of the small tassel. I concluded that you can get evenly sized yarn loops quickly with a lace fork. I don’t own a lace fork, so I rigged one up from my silver jewellery tools. By wrapping yarn around the sticks and bending thin metal wire around the links, I created a large tassel that looked nothing like the original. I folded the tassel fringe in half in the middle where the metal wire gathered the loops. The second tassel I made still using same tool, but in addition to just the metal wire, I tied the tassels with yarn first and wrapped the metal wire afterwards. The end result was better but still different from the original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After thinking about it, I realised that I had put the metal wire wrongly in the middle of the tassels. Instead, it should be wrapped only at one end of shorter loops. I tested this by wrapping the tassels around my finger first. It seemed to work , but it was a bit tricky. Then I made a cardboard base and wrapped the yarn around it the same way I did around my finger. That worked too, but the tassels came quite a lot apart from each other and getting the metal wire sensibly was a very frustrating fiddle. The end result is closest to the original, but there has to be a more sensible system to it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was also wondering if the fingerloop braiding would be suitable for this. Unfortunately, I don’t know that technique, so I can’t say for sure yes or no. Unfortunately, my brain couldn’t come up with a better solution for this Christmas calendar. Can you think of a better way to do this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n
