Man-made fibres are divided into semi-synthetic fibres and synthetic fibres. Semi-synthetic fibres are made from natural raw materials such as wood cellulose or cotton lint. Synthetic fibres are made from various synthetic polymers. Acrylic is a versatile material, as it can be used to make a wide range of products such as perspex, paints and sealants. As a textile fibre, acrylic mimics the look and feel of wool. Its trade names include Dralon and Orlon. In textiles it is used instead of wool, especially in knitwear, but also in woven fabrics. Acrylic is often mixed with other fibers, but also often on its own.

The good properties of acrylic are its lightness, fluffyness, resistance to wrinkling, easy formability and adaptability. Acrylic dyes well, giving acrylic yarns bright and vibrant, permanent colours and a wide range of colours. Softness makes it suitable for those who are allergic to wool and it has often been used for yarns for baby knitwear, for example. On the other hand, the softness and frizziness can be felt on skin as the 100% acrylic textile clings to all the tiny roughness off the skin.

Aryylilangasta voidaan valmistaa monentyyppisiä lankoja. Here is a knit made of ribbon yarn, which doesn’t even try to imitate wool.

Acrylic is highly resistant to washing, cleanses in cool wash temperatures and dries quickly. In a blend fabric, these properties may not be an advantage if the washing properties of the other fibres are very different. After all, acrylic can’t handle hot temperatures. On the other hand, acrylic also creates pilling easily and becomes static easily and thus, attracts dirt easily. Acrylic knit loses its structure if it is steam. I have tested this myself as a student, by knitting a piece of lace which I steamed smooth. The loose knit became flattened and sturdy, fluffy stitches sort of became limp and opened up due the steam. On the other hand, this feature can be used as an effect. In the early 2000s, fine acrylic lace knits were knitted with large stitch size and then steamed to make them become thin and smooth, delicate and graceful knits.

Acrylic has a moderate wear resistance, but it cannot withstand heavy use. However for me, the main drawbacks of acrylic are its tendency to become very static and feel of sweatyness and cold in low winter temperatures. I can wear a cardigan with 80% acrylic, but not acrylic blend pants. The thighs rubbing against each other create unpleasant static shocks, which you feel through the fabric. The more the blended fabric has wool instead of acrylic, the more comfortable it is to wear. Of course, a higher wool content will also have an effect on the washing properties and wear and tear. Acrylic is best suited to curtains and sails, because it has better resistance to sunshine and weather conditions than any other fiber.

Manufacturing
Acrylic fibres can be produced chemically with different methods. All acrylic fibres contain minimum 85 % of acrylonitrile off weight. Acrylonitrile is spun into fibres by either the wet or dry spinning process. In most cases, acrylic filament fibres are chopped into shorter fibres to obtain the desired properties. The filament fibres may be curled or shrunk before cutting.

Care
Acrylic should be washed frequently, with a mild detergent, preferably at 30-40 degrees Celsius, on a delicate cycle. It is not resistant to hot and strongly alkaline detergents. Fabric softener reduces the static electricity of the acrylic. Personally, I prefer to use vinegar as fabric softener. It seems to work well, at least for that cardigan I mentioned earlier. Acrylic textiles are shaped when wet and dried at room temperature, preferably flat dry. Tumble drying is not suitable for them. Acrylic does not usually need ironing and will straighten itself as it dries, but if necessary it can be ironed with a mild heat, one point on iron. Chlorine bleaching has no bleaching effect on acrylic. Easy care may be considered the best thing about acrylic, but in my opinion it is not enough to make up for the cons of the fibre in clothing.

Imitations
Acrylic has no imitations, acrylic itself is one. It is added to textiles instead of wool to reduce material costs, because it is very cheap to produce. Acrylic imitates wool so well that it can sometimes be almost impossible to tell the difference. The “finger-sticking” I mentioned earlier can sometimes reveal the acrylic. In a burn test, the acrylic will burn by shrinking away from the flame. Burning flame is whiteish-orange. Fibers can sputter, flare up and drip when burning. Burning residue is uneven, plasticy and hard drops. When doing the burn test, use always fire-proof base and use metal tongs or tweezers.

Even small amounts of wool in an acrylic knit will make it more comfortable to wear, but the more wool, the higher quality the knit is likely to be. Preferable amount of wool in acrylic mix should be alteast 50%. Generally in mixed textiles, acrylic doesn’t add any good features to a garment other than cheaper price. So the smaller the amount of acrylic the better. I wouldn’t buy 100% acrylic clothing at all unless it is absolutely essential to avoid wool for one reason or another (e.g. allergy). Even then I would prefer blends with other materials such as polyamide or viscose.

Guides for other fibers:
Linen
Silk
Wool
General fiber info

Pörröisen pehmeä neule näyttää villalta, mutta on 100% akryyliä. /
This soft and fluffy knit looks like wool, but is 100% acrylic.

Tämän akryylineuleen pinta on kuvioitu painamalla siihen printti mustalla värillä.
