Minulta on mennyt koko kes\u00e4 sattuneesta syyst\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4n penkin alle. Puutarhahommat ja bloggaaminenkaan eiv\u00e4t ole olleet ihan ykk\u00f6sen\u00e4 puuhalistalla. Omat kasvatukset ovat rajoittuneet l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 itse itsens\u00e4 kasvattavaa maa-artisokkaan, muutamaan perunan taimeen ja monivuotisiin yrtteihin. Omavaraisuus-aiheena on t\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa syyskylv\u00f6t, varastointi ja opiskelu. Tuttuun tapaan my\u00f6s kuulumisia voi kertoa ja raportoida omasta edistymisest\u00e4. Olen ollut koko kes\u00e4n melko v\u00e4synyt ja ajatukset ovat askarrelleet muissa asioissa. Se on heijastunut suoraan puutarhahommiin. En ole jaksanut tehd\u00e4 puutarhassa juuri mit\u00e4\u00e4n. Kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 siirsin ja istutin muutaman monivuotisen yrtin ja v\u00e4h\u00e4n perunaa, mutta siihen se sitten oikeastaan j\u00e4ikin. Kaikki suunnitelmat kes\u00e4kukista ja muista vihanneksista j\u00e4iv\u00e4t hautajais- ja kuolinpes\u00e4-asioiden jalkoihin. Vaikka tiesin ett\u00e4 syksyll\u00e4 iskee annoskateus ja harmittaa, p\u00e4\u00e4tin ett\u00e4 no olkoon t\u00e4m\u00e4 nyt sitten kasvatusten osalta kevyempi kes\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi pihapiiriss\u00e4mme pesi talitiainen ja harmaasieppo, joten jouduimme rajoittamaan pihassa liikkumista kuukauden verran<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Innottomuudesta huolimatta olen kuitenkin saanut satoa kasaan. Omasta pihasta ja l\u00e4himets\u00e4st\u00e4 olen ker\u00e4nnyt villiyrttej\u00e4 luonnonl\u00e4\u00e4kkeeksi, muutamia monivuotisia yrttej\u00e4, marjoja ja sieni\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi viime syksyn\u00e4 istuttamani talvivalkosipulit tuottivat hiukan satoa. Naapurin runsassatoisista hedelm\u00e4puista saimme omenia ja \u00e4idin pihasta lis\u00e4\u00e4 marjoja. Mit\u00e4\u00e4n ihmeellisi\u00e4 reseptej\u00e4 ei siis ole ja kun maakellariakaan ei edelleenk\u00e4\u00e4n meill\u00e4 ole, varastoinnin on oltava mahdollista huoneenl\u00e4mm\u00f6ss\u00e4 tai j\u00e4\u00e4kaapeissa ja pakastimessa. Meill\u00e4 tulee parhaiten k\u00e4ytetty\u00e4 yrtit, omenat ja sienet kuivattuna, mustikat, puolukat, karhunvadelmat, ja vadelmat pakastettuna, tyrnit ja viinimarjat mehuna. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kuivaaminen on siit\u00e4 k\u00e4tev\u00e4 tapa s\u00e4il\u00f6\u00e4, ett\u00e4 se ei varastoinnin aikana vaadi erikseen energiaa. Toki kuivaaminen vie hiukan, jos k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 hy\u00f6tykuivuria, mutta esim yrtit voi kuivattaa huoneenl\u00e4mm\u00f6ss\u00e4 ilman erillist\u00e4 kuivuria. Lis\u00e4ksi kuivatut ruokatarpeet viev\u00e4t varastoituna paljon v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n tilaa kuin pakastetut tai muulla tavoin s\u00e4il\u00f6tyt. Meill\u00e4 yrtit ja sienet tulee parhaiten k\u00e4ytetty\u00e4 tuoreena ja kuivattuina, joten en oikeastaan varastoi niit\u00e4 muulla tavoin kuin kuivattuna. Viinimarjoista tein mehumaijalla perinteist\u00e4 h\u00f6yrymehua, tyrneist\u00e4 keitin aromikasta mehua ja omenoita vein paikalliselle mehuasemalle puristettavaksi. Omenamehun olisi voinut my\u00f6s past\u00f6roida, jolloin se s\u00e4ilyisi huoneenl\u00e4mm\u00f6ss\u00e4. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa p\u00e4\u00e4tin ottaa mehun ilman past\u00f6rointia ja pakastaa sen. Saattaa olla ett\u00e4 jatkossa otan my\u00f6s past\u00f6roinnin, jotta en t\u00e4yt\u00e4 pakastinta mehuilla. Keitetyt ja h\u00f6yrymehut s\u00e4ilyt\u00e4n j\u00e4\u00e4kaapissa. Meill\u00e4 onkin tavallisen ison j\u00e4\u00e4kaapin lis\u00e4ksi pienempi ns. varaj\u00e4\u00e4kaappi jossa s\u00e4il\u00f6t\u00e4\u00e4n mehuja ja hilloja sek\u00e4 muita ruokia jotka eiv\u00e4t mahdu ykk\u00f6sj\u00e4\u00e4kaapiin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muita marjoja (kuin viinimarjoja) oli t\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna sen verran pieni\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4ri\u00e4, ett\u00e4 ne joko k\u00e4ytettiin tuoreeltaan tai pakastettiin. Ruusun ter\u00e4lehdist\u00e4 keitin siirappia joka s\u00e4ilytet\u00e4\u00e4n j\u00e4\u00e4kaapissa. Perunoista ja valkosipulista tuli sen verran pienet sadot ett\u00e4 perunat s\u00e4ilyv\u00e4t paperipussissa j\u00e4\u00e4kaapin vihanneslaatikossa ja valkosipulit p\u00f6yd\u00e4ll\u00e4 keramiikkapurkissa. Viel\u00e4 tulee ker\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4ksi v\u00e4h\u00e4n lis\u00e4\u00e4 tyrni\u00e4, ruusukvitteni\u00e4 ja ehk\u00e4 puolukkaakin. Ruusikvitteni on itselleni melko uusi tuttavuus, mutta se luultavasti tulee keitelty\u00e4 marmelaadiksi.  Niin ja se maa-artisokka varastoituu p\u00e4\u00e4osin maassa. Nostan siit\u00e4 pian osan ja j\u00e4t\u00e4n loput maahan talveksi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No ent\u00e4 mit\u00e4 muuta varastoimme? Paljon kaikkea askartelutarvikkeista kankaisiin ja polttopuuhun. Varastoimme my\u00f6skin joulukoristeita, erilaisia kukkaruukkuja, remonttitarvikkeita, huonekaluja jotka odottavat sopivaa k\u00e4ytt\u00f6tilaa tai korjausta, maaleja, tapettin\u00e4ytteit\u00e4, puutavaraa ja erityisesti ruuveja ja nauloja. Koska asumme kaukana isoista kauppakeskuksista, on mukavaa kun kotoa l\u00f6ytyy v\u00e4h\u00e4n kaikkea niin ett\u00e4 inspiraation yll\u00e4tt\u00e4ess\u00e4 hommaan voi ryhty\u00e4 heti, eik\u00e4 tarvitse ensimm\u00e4isen\u00e4 l\u00e4hte\u00e4 reilun puolen tunnin ajomatkan p\u00e4\u00e4h\u00e4n kaupoille. Tavoite on ett\u00e4 kaikella varastoitavalla olisi oma laatikko, mieluusti tukeva, pinottava ja kest\u00e4v\u00e4. Suuret tavarat varastoidaan sellaisenaan sill\u00e4 laatikko veisi enemm\u00e4n tilaa. Kes\u00e4ll\u00e4 varastoimme autojen peitteit\u00e4, lumikolia ja -lapioita, lintujen ruokaa ja hiekoitusmursketta. Talvella varastoimme vastaavasti kes\u00e4kalusteita, puutarhaty\u00f6kaluja ja vesisaaveja. Iso talo ulkovarastoineen on ideaali kun t\u00e4ytyy s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4\u00e4 paljon tavaraa. Ulkovarastoon mahtuvat ulkona k\u00e4ytett\u00e4v\u00e4t sesonkitarvikkeet ja polttopuut, joiden osalta olemme etuoikeutetussa asemassa. Niit\u00e4 ei nimitt\u00e4in tarvitse ostaa lis\u00e4\u00e4 vuosiin, puuliiteri kun oli t\u00e4ynn\u00e4 silloin kun ostimme talon. Edellistalvet ovat tehneet siihen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 pienen loven. Kaikki muu varastoidaan kaksikerroksisen hirsitalon seinien sis\u00e4ll\u00e4. Yl\u00e4kerrassa olevat huoneet toimivat juuri t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa varastoina ja remonttihuoneina. I haven&#8217;t really done much on that perspective this Summer. Gardening and blogging hasn&#8217;t really been the number one on my list. I haven&#8217;t really grown much else than jerusalem artichoke (which basically grows itself), couple potatoes and perennial herbs. I have been pretty tired all Summer and my thoughts have been in other matters. It&#8217;s been directly affecting on gardening. I haven&#8217;t really done much at all in the garden. In the spring I moved and planted couple perennial herbs and some potatoes, but that&#8217;s pretty much it. All plans of summer flowers and vegetable were trampled by the funeral and other related matters. Even though I knew I will be little bit upset in the Autumn when harvest season arrives, I decided that this is a bit more modest harvest. Also there was great tit and spotted flycatcher nesting on our yard, so we had to limit our activity in the yard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite of the lack of enthusiasm, I did managed to get some harvest. From our own yard and forests nearby I have collected medicinal wild herbs, some perennial herbs, berries and mushrooms. Also the winter garlic, which I planted last Autumn, provided little bit harvest. We also got some apples from neighbour and berries from mums yard. So I don&#8217;t have any fancy recipes to share. And we still don&#8217;t have the cellar either, so everything must be stored either room temperature or fridge and freezer. Mostly we use dried herbs, apples and mushrooms  and frozen bilberries, lingonberries, blackberries and raspberries. Wineberries are usually juiced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drying is handy way, because for storaging it doesn&#8217;t really need any extra energy. Sure, the drying takes little bit, if you use dehydrator, but herbs you can dry in room temperature. Also dried food doesn&#8217;t take that much space. Jars and bottles takes much more space and so does anything frozen. Herbs and mushrooms we usually dry, because those we use the most. I store jars of dried herbs and mushrooms in cupboards, dried apple slices too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love all sorts of juices, so this year I decided to crazy. I made traditional steamed juice from wine berries, quick boiled juice from sea-buckthorn berries and apples I took to the local juice station for squeezing. I could have had the apple juice also pasteurised, but this time I decided to freeze it. In the future I might go in with the pasteurizing, so that I don&#8217;t fill our freezer with juice. Boiled and steamed juices I have to store in fridge. In addition of regular large fridge, we have also smaller storage fridge, where we keep juice, jam and other food which doesn&#8217;t fit in our main fridge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other berries (than wineberries) we didn&#8217;t have large amounts so we mostly ate them fresh, or froze. From rose petals I made delicious syrup, which is stored in fridge. Potatoes and garlic gave small harvests. Potatoes are stored in paperbag in fridge and garlics are on a ceramic pot on the counter. There is still little bit harvest to collect from sea-bucthorn, flowering quince and perhaps lingonberries too. Flowering quince is quite new to me, but I probably make marmalade from that. Oh yeah, the jerusalem artichoke is mainly stored underground. Soon I will harvest some of them, and leave rest of them into the ground for the winter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What else do we store? Lots of things from handcrafting materials to fabrics and fire wood. We also store christmas decorations, all sorts of flower pots, renovation equipment and materials, furniture which are waiting their final places or renovating, paints, wallpaper samples, wood and especially we seem to store nails and screws. Because we live quite far from big shopping centers, it&#8217;s nice to have pretty much anything at home. So when the inspiration hits, we don&#8217;t first have to drive over half an hour to the shops. The goal is that everything is stored in boxes, which are preferably sturdy, stackable and longlasting. Large items are stored as they are, because large boxes would take too much space. In the summer we store car covers, snow plows and shovels, bird feed and gravel. In the winter we store garden furniture, garden tools and water butts. Big house with barn is ideal when having to store lot of stuff. Barn is big enough for all of the garden stuff, car tires and fire wood. We are pretty priviledged to have so much fire wood. Barn was full of it when we bought the house so it lasts for years. Everything else is stored inside the house. Upstairs rooms are mostly used for storing stuff at the moment. That is good because we use it a lot. It is excellent spice on pizza and I love to sprinkle plenty ontop any pizza.
