Keiky\u00e4n kotiseutumuseo<\/a> mainosti taannoin perinnep\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4, joten p\u00e4\u00e4tin l\u00e4hte\u00e4 katsomaan mit\u00e4 mielenkiintoista l\u00f6yt\u00e4isin. En ole aiemmin vieraillut Keiky\u00e4n kotiseutumuseossa, vaikka monia muita Sastamalan museoita olenkin jo kiert\u00e4nyt. Perinnep\u00e4iv\u00e4n teemana oli kehr\u00e4ys ja pihapiiriss\u00e4 n\u00e4htiinkin mm. keritsemisn\u00e4yt\u00f6s, pellavan k\u00e4sittely\u00e4 ja kehr\u00e4yst\u00e4. Museon tuvasta sai vapaaehtoisella maksulla kahvia, mehua ja aivan erinomaisia s\u00e4mpyl\u00f6it\u00e4 joissa oli p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 kutunjuustoa. Saliin oli saapunut paikallishistorian tuntija Mika Susi pit\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n luennon \u00c4ets\u00e4n kehruutehtaan historiasta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nykyinen Sastamalan alue, jossa mekin olemme asuneet jo vuodesta 2016 l\u00e4htien, on ollut aikanaan hyvin tunnettu erilaisista k\u00e4sity\u00f6teollisista tuotteistaan. Kiikassa on valmistettu rukkeja jo 1800-luvun puoliv\u00e4lin tienoilta l\u00e4htien. Tyrv\u00e4\u00e4 on ollut tunnettu tallukasmestareistaan. Sek\u00e4 Mouhij\u00e4rvell\u00e4 ett\u00e4 \u00c4ets\u00e4ss\u00e4 on ollut puuvilla- ja villatehtaita. Erityisen aktiivista k\u00e4sity\u00f6l\u00e4isyytt\u00e4 on kuitenkin harrastettu Keiky\u00e4ss\u00e4. Siell\u00e4 on nimitt\u00e4in valmistettu monenmoista sarvikammoista ja laukuista l\u00e4htien. Nyky\u00e4\u00e4n tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n ett\u00e4 juuri sarvikammat ovat olleet alkusys\u00e4ys sille ett\u00e4 Keiky\u00e4st\u00e4 on tullut aikanaan niin monipuolinen k\u00e4sity\u00f6pit\u00e4j\u00e4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaikka tietoa erilaisten k\u00e4sit\u00f6iden historiasta on vuosien varrella kertynyt omaankin p\u00e4\u00e4h\u00e4n melkoisen paljon, aina oppii lis\u00e4\u00e4. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa sain kuulla ett\u00e4 Keiky\u00e4ss\u00e4 on aikanaan valmistettu perinteisi\u00e4 lankanappeja myyntiin. Moni nainen on ansainnut v\u00e4h\u00e4n lis\u00e4tienesti\u00e4 ja onpa muutama nainen el\u00e4tt\u00e4nytkin itsens\u00e4 aivan tyystin lankanappien ompelulla. T\u00e4ytyy sanoa ett\u00e4 on kyll\u00e4 oltava valtavan nopea ja n\u00e4pp\u00e4r\u00e4 jotta nappien ompelulla on voinut itsens\u00e4 el\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olen itse ommellut opiskeluaikana pari lankanappia (en l\u00f6yt\u00e4nyt niit\u00e4 t\u00e4h\u00e4n h\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n vaikka tied\u00e4n ett\u00e4 ne ovat jossakin tallessa) ja tied\u00e4n ett\u00e4 aikamoista v\u00e4rkk\u00e4\u00e4mist\u00e4 se on. Tosin n\u00e4m\u00e4 keiky\u00e4l\u00e4iset naiset k\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t apuna tuollaista nappipulikkaa jonka ymp\u00e4rille nappi ommeltiin. Entisin\u00e4 aikoina oltiin huomattavan paljon s\u00e4\u00e4steli\u00e4\u00e4mpi\u00e4 kuin nykyisin. Lankanappien sis\u00e4osa kieputettiin jostakin j\u00e4m\u00e4langan p\u00e4tkist\u00e4. Nappipulikoiden tallat valmistettiin sarvikampojen j\u00e4m\u00e4paloista. Mit\u00e4\u00e4n ei siis mennyt hukkaan. Lankanappien valmistus hiipui v\u00e4hitellen 40-luvun j\u00e4lkeen kun vaatteiden keittopesu ja mankelointi alkoivat j\u00e4\u00e4d\u00e4 unholaan. Muoviset napit syrj\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t helppoudellaan hidas-t\u00f6iset lankanapit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keiky\u00e4n kotiseutumuseo on siit\u00e4 erikoislaatuinen museo, ett\u00e4 siell\u00e4 on esineist\u00f6\u00e4 varsin laajalta skaalalta. Kun kotiseutumuseot tyypillisesti keskittyv\u00e4t pitk\u00e4lti maatalouteen, Keiky\u00e4st\u00e4 l\u00f6ytyy paljon nimenomaan erilaisiin k\u00e4sity\u00f6ammatteihin liittyv\u00e4\u00e4 esineist\u00f6\u00e4 ja hiukan erikoisempiakin esineit\u00e4 kuten puhelinkeskus. Museon pihapiiriin kuuluu my\u00f6s kiinnostava, k\u00e4r\u00e4j\u00e4tupana, postina ja kestikievarinakin toiminut ylistupa, jossa kivisen kellarin yl\u00e4puolelle on rakennettu tupa jonne kuljetaan portaita. Ylistuvassa on upeat savilaastirappaukset ja sabloonein maalatut “tapetit” jotka on konservoitu 1980-luvun alussa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kotimaanmatkailua harrastavalle suosittelen ehdottomasti Keiky\u00e4n kotiseutumuseota retkikohteeksi. Syyskuussa museo on viel\u00e4 avoinna ryhmille, suljettuna lokakuusta huhtikuun loppuun. Ja samalla jos ja kun suuntaa t\u00e4nne Sastamalan nurkille, kannattaa poiketa my\u00f6skin Sastamalan seudun museossa<\/a>, Pukstaavissa<\/a>, Kinnalan Koukun suojeluskunta- ja lottamuseossa<\/a> ja Kotaj\u00e4rven auto- ja traktorimuseossa<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n

Keiky\u00e4 local museum<\/a> advertised recently their heritage day, so I decided to visit them and have a look. I have never been to that museum before, even though I have visited most museums in the area. Theme of the day was spinning and they were showcasing sheering and spinning and even scutching and hackling flax. They were serving coffee and juice and splendidly delicious rolls, topped with goats cheese. In the main hall was held a lecture about local yarn and fabric factory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current Sastamala area, where we have also now lived since 2016, has been very well known for it’s hand and crafts products. Kiikka has been well know for the spinning wheels, since mid 1800’s. Tyrv\u00e4\u00e4 has been the best place to buy soft fabric shoes. There’s been yarn and fabric factories in both Mouhij\u00e4rvi and \u00c4ets\u00e4. However the most active handcrafting area has been in Keiky\u00e4 municipality. There’s been all sorts from horn combs to bags and all in between. These days we know that it was pretty much the horn combs which were the launch for such huge variety of handcrafters in Keiky\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though I already have lot of knowledge of history of handcrafting, I always learn more. This time I heard that Keiky\u00e4 has been very productive area for yarn buttons. Many women have been earling little bit of extra by sewing yarn buttons by hand. There have even been some women who have earned their whole income just by making buttons. I have to say that you had to be very fast and handy to do so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have made couple yarn buttons during my studies (I could not find them for this post, even though I know they are somewhere safe) and for that reason I know it is little bit fiddly. Allthough these Keiky\u00e4 women used a special tool for sewing them. In the old times, people were much more economic. Nothing was thrown away and even the leftovers were used. So women used leftover yars for insides of the buttons and used the better yarn only to cover the insides. Also the too they used for sewing utilised leftovers. Washer, which was used to push the button off the tool, was made of leftover horn. Horns were used in Keiky\u00e4 area to make special horn combs. So nothing was wasted back then. Manufacturing the yarn buttons slowly faded around 1940’s when boilwash and mangling were also becoming obsolete. Plastic buttons took over because they were more practical and faster to make. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local museum of Keiky\u00e4 is a bit special, because they have wide variety of things on display. Usually local musems are concentrated on farming items, but Keiky\u00e4 has extremely lot of handcraft items and also some more unsual things, like phone central. There’s also interesting building, “ylistupa” on the yard. Ylistupa means a house which is built ontop rock cellar and you have to climb stairs to get to the house. It’s been used atlast for countryside court, post office and inn. There’s quite remarkable clay plaster on the inside walls and template painted “wallpapers”. Those were conservated in the beginning of 1980’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who are traveling here in Finland and Sastamala area I highly recommend Keiky\u00e4 local museum for a visit. In September the museum is open only for groups by appointment and it will close for winter season October-April. And while you are in the region, you should also pop up in Sastamala region museum<\/a>, Pukstaavi<\/a>, Kinnalan Koukku civil guard and Finnish women’s auxiliary corps “Lotta”-museum<\/a> and Kotaj\u00e4rvi car and tractor museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
