<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nLet’s dig again deep into the life of an old house. From the beginning it was clear that improvements needed to be done to the rainwater drainage. Over the years Pinehill has encountered the typical old house remodelling when round rainwater drain pipes have been replaced with square ones. The design of the house would demand traditional vertical seam tin roof with sort of rainwater ramps on the bottom, with funnels and round drainpipes. Allthough, originally the house had thin wood shingles, called p\u00e4re in Finnish. During that period of time, also the drainage system was probably made of wood and most likely there was no drainpipes going down at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Square drainpipes are in my opinion quite ugly looking (I think they work better with modern houses), but they are also rather impractical. If the installation is made poorly the hole is not tidy. It might be cut unevenly and even sharp corners might have been left there. No-one will see, it so aesthetically it doesn’t matter, however all the leaves and other bits will get caught on them and block the drain and it is more difficult to clean too. You can mess this up with round drainpipe too, however when using the funnel top, there is no need for the hole. Then water runs to the end of the rain gutter and falls to the funnel. On heavy rain all of the rain gutters overflow, drain pipes got blocked and water came pouring over the edge of the gutter either directly to ground or poured down on the wall. Hubby’s job on rainy days has been to check the gutters and if needed, clean them from leaves, branches and other gunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So far we have replaced two square drain pipes with round ones and added one new to corner which didn’t have any drainpipe at all. There is still three more to change and one to add. Slowly but surely we are getting there. Spring last year we had to get one new gutter because it was damaged by snow. At the same time we changed the pipe. Straight away, on the very first rainy day it was clear that all of them needs to be changed. Difference was such significant. There is no need to constantly clear the connection point of the gutter and drain pipe, because it doesn’t get blocked anymore. Also the new pipe has a little swiveling part for directing the water into a barrel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two drain pipes, which were installed this summer, are now working without any problems. On the road side of the house has problematic small corner where tiny gutter is collecting water from two sides of the roof. This gutter is against the wall and it has previously been overflowing and water has been pouring down along the wall. Because of that, there is rot inside that wall, waiting to be repaired. Yay. However now, due to the new pipe and gutter with funnel, the water is not pouring down the wall anymore, but goes where it should go to, into the drain pipe. We had some logs replaced on this corner couple years ago. Bottom log was completely disintegrated. Due to the new drain pipe, these new logs probably last much longer than the previous ones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition of poorly working gutters, the rainwater control on the property needs improving in general. Yard is challenging because house is really close to the road and road is higher than the house. This means that all water coming from the road (rainwater and melting snow) is coming downhill towards the house. So it’s a bit challenging to guide the water away from the house. Square drain pipes are connected to the gutter where ever happened to be the shortest distance, so not on the end. There is still three of these left. This particular one in the photo gets blocked pretty much every time when it rains. Unfortunately it is also the highest of them all, so it is really tricky to clean. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.evildressmaker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/rainwatercontrol4.jpg?resize=749%2C1024\")
This corner had originally two drain pipes. Oh yes, there was another one on the pillar. It was removed almost first thing, because it was gathering water into that corner. Gutter was renewed last year, because old one came down with the melting snow that spring. At the same time new drain pipe was installed on the other end of the gutter (seen on the next photo).<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.evildressmaker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/rainwatercontrol3.jpg?resize=768%2C1024\")
Funnels at the top of the drainpipes are actually quite pretty. Front one is the other end of the gutter on the previous photo. This roof is made in peculiar manner. I don’t understand why this side of the roof wasn’t continued on the edge all the way to the bottom. That small corner with short gutter is really impractical and awkward. Our corner of sad circumstance, aka the mini gutter and drain pipe. This takes all rainwater from two sides of the roof. Longer gutter above the short one also pours all waters into this small gutter because there is no drain pipe on the other end of it. As you can see from the wall under the gutter, it’s been pretty wet past decades. On heavy rain water comes down so hard the drainpipe doesn’t have enough capacity for it. Thankfully situation is now better with the new funnel.
