Olen kaiken t\u00e4m\u00e4n huolen ja kohun keskell\u00e4 tuntenut itseni hirmuisen onnekkaaksi, sill\u00e4 meill\u00e4 on talossa per\u00e4ti viisi tulipes\u00e4\u00e4. Niill\u00e4 talo kyll\u00e4 pysyy l\u00e4mpim\u00e4n\u00e4 vaikka pakollisia s\u00e4hk\u00f6katkoja tulisikin. L\u00e4mmit\u00e4mme aktiivisesti kolmea tulipes\u00e4\u00e4 vuorop\u00e4ivin. Kaiken lis\u00e4ksi kun ostimme talon, se tuli varsin kattavan polttopuuvaraston kera. Arvioidemme mukaan, polttopuuta riitt\u00e4\u00e4 liiteriss\u00e4 viel\u00e4 ainakin ensitalveksi, ehk\u00e4 ylikin. Ainoa joka v\u00e4h\u00e4n harmittaa on ett\u00e4 talon edellinen asukas on poistattanut keitti\u00f6st\u00e4 puuhellan. Siit\u00e4 olisi ollut paljon apua l\u00e4mmitykseen ja ruuanlaittoon. Toisaalta nyt kun yksi hormeista ei ole k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4, meill\u00e4 olisi optio asennuttaa yl\u00e4kerran keitti\u00f6\u00f6n puuhella tai kamiina. T\u00e4m\u00e4 voisi olla j\u00e4rkev\u00e4 ajatus, ottaen huomioon ett\u00e4 viidest\u00e4 tulipes\u00e4st\u00e4 vain yksi on yl\u00e4kerrassa. Olen hiukan haaveillut sellaisesta vanhasta valurautakamiinasta jossa on p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 keittolevy, mutta aika n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 millaiseen ratkaisuun p\u00e4\u00e4dyt\u00e4\u00e4n sitten kun yl\u00e4kerran keitti\u00f6 tulee remontointivuoroon. Puuhellan tai kamiinan l\u00e4mmitystehoa voisi viel\u00e4 tehostaa kamiinapuhaltimella joka levitt\u00e4\u00e4 l\u00e4mmint\u00e4 ilmaa tehokkaammin koko huoneeseen. Kakluuneilla kamiinapuhallin ei valitettavasti toimi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angular metal covered fireplace is upstairs and is not currently in use because upstairs is not living area yet. Utility room has another metal covered fireplace, but it’s more traditional shape, round. However it is in worst condition of all five fireplaces. It can be used occasionally with the permission of our chimney sweep, however before active use it needs repairs on the fire pit. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Niiss\u00e4 on t\u00e4ytteen\u00e4 kuivattuja herneit\u00e4 ja\/tai kangassilppua. Postauksen lopussa tarkemmat ohjeet sellaisen valmistamiseen. Vedon poistamiseen auttaa kuulemma my\u00f6s korvausilmaventtiilien asennus, jolloin huoneeseen vaadittava korvausilma tulee hallitusti venttiilin kautta, eik\u00e4 lattian raoista ja muualta rakenteissa olevista v\u00e4leist\u00e4. Niit\u00e4 emme kuitenkaan ole viel\u00e4 saaneet aikaiseksi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alakerran lattiat tullaan aikanaan kaikki uusimaan eristeiden ja tuulensuojan osalta (vasta yksi pieni huone tehty), mutta siihen asti t\u00e4ytyy p\u00e4rj\u00e4ill\u00e4 vedonpoistajien ja kerrospukeutumisen avulla. Itse olen tottunut kerrospukeutuja sill\u00e4 kroppani reagoi \u00e4\u00e4riolosuhteisiin eli helteeseen ja pakkaseen nopeasti. Niinp\u00e4 talvivaatevarastoni koostuukin villaisista hameista, villasukkahousuista, pitkist\u00e4 v\u00e4lihousuista, lyhyist\u00e4 villahousuista, s\u00e4\u00e4rystimist\u00e4, polvenl\u00e4mmittimist\u00e4, turkist\u00f6pp\u00f6sist\u00e4 (joihin l\u00f6yd\u00e4t ohjeen t\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4<\/a>), tohveleista, pitk\u00e4- ja lyhytvartisista villasukista, ohuista ja paksummista neuletakeista. Vaihtelen n\u00e4it\u00e4 kaikkia sen mukaan mik\u00e4 kulloinkin on tarpeen. Talvella jalassa on aina v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4n yhdet villasukat ja tohvelit tai turkist\u00f6pp\u00f6set. T\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4 l\u00f6yd\u00e4t vinkkini kerrospukeutumiseen<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olen ker\u00e4nnyt meille my\u00f6s valikoiman erilaisia vilttej\u00e4, turkisv\u00e4llyj\u00e4 ja vierasvillasukkia. Aina l\u00f6ytyy siis jokin l\u00e4mmin viltti tai ylim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4inen pari sukkia, johon k\u00e4\u00e4riyty\u00e4 jos viluttaa. Tosin nyt n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 ett\u00e4 kissat ovat omineet kaikki turkisv\u00e4llyt itselleen. Niit\u00e4 pit\u00e4\u00e4 tehd\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4, minulla on pari vanhaa turkinretaletta joista olin aikonut tehd\u00e4 v\u00e4llyj\u00e4. Kovina pakkas\u00f6in\u00e4 t\u00e4yt\u00e4mme kuumavesipullot s\u00e4nky\u00e4 l\u00e4mmitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n. Kylm\u00e4 s\u00e4\u00e4 ei minua varsinaisesti h\u00e4iritse sill\u00e4 pystyn pukeutumisella s\u00e4\u00e4telem\u00e4\u00e4n olotilaani tarpeen mukaan. Is\u00e4nt\u00e4 taas inhoaa paksuja vaatekerroksia. H\u00e4n on muutenkin enemm\u00e4n neulepuseromiehi\u00e4 ja tykk\u00e4\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 neulepuseroita ohuemman paidan p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4. Toisaalta h\u00e4n on my\u00f6s paljon l\u00e4mminverisempi kuin min\u00e4 ja tarkenee minua paremmin vaikka inhoaakin kylm\u00e4\u00e4. Itselleni haasteita l\u00e4mpim\u00e4n\u00e4 pysymiseen tuo nuoruusaikoina palellutetut polvet, kasvot ja varpaat. <\/p>\n\n\n

There’s been lots of talk about the price and sufficiency of electricity during whole Autumn and Winter. During all this worry and brouhaha I have felt very lucky. We have five fireplaces in our house. With those we are able to keep our house warm, even if there is going to be planned power cuts. We are actively warming three fireplaces in turns. Also, when we bought the house, the log storage was full of firewood. To our estimates, we have enough wood atleast this and next winter, possibly even for longer. One thing that slightly annoys me is that the previous resident had the wood range taken away. That would have enormously helped with keeping the house warm and cooking. On the other hand, now when one of the chimneys is available, we could have another fireplace installed upstairs. It might be sensible, after all, only one of our five fireplaces is upstairs at the moment. I have dreamed of fancy old cast iron stove with cooking ring ontop. But time will tell what solution we end up with, upstairs kitchen is not coming under renovation for some time. It’s also possible to enhance the warming effect of stove with stove fan which distributes the warm air evenly to the room. Unfortunately it does not work with tile fireplaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living room (on the left) and dining room tile fireplaces are in regular use. They distribute the heat pretty evenly one or two days after has gone out. Allthough I have heard that they don’t have as good heat-reserve capacity as metal-casing fireplaces have. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

So we have warm house, but floors in the old house are always drafty, so wooly socks and slippers are much needed. Changes in the weather affect quite a lot how it feels inside. When temperatures drop or when it’s very windy, you can feel it in your feet. Draft is our worst enemy in the house. We use thick curtains in front of our windows and outside doors and roller blinds on the windows to prevent the draft. Roller blinds are handy also in summer, of course. I have also made draft blockers for areas that feel very drafty, like side of the wall on the floor. Draft blockers are fabric tubes filled with dried peas and\/or small fabric scraps. Instructions to make them at the end of the post. I have also heard that compensation air vents will reduce draft. Via the vents air flow into the room is more controlled and then it is not coming via small gaps and holes in construction of the house. However we don’t have any of those yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of downstairs floors need new insulation and windshields (only one small room done), but untill that happens, we have to settle for draft stoppers and layered clothing. I am used to layering, because my body reacts to extreme weather like heatwaves and freezing cold very quickly. So my winter wardrobe is full of stuff like wool skirts, wool tights, wool pants, legwarmers, knee warmers, fur slippers (you can find DIY for your own pair from here<\/a>), slippers, long and short wool socks, thin and thick cardigans etc. I swap these garments depending on the need of warmth. In the winter I am always wearing atleast one pair of wool socks and pair of slippers or fur booties. Here are my tips for layering for winter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have also collected a selection of throw blankets, sheepskins and wool socks for visitors. There is always a warm blanket or extra pair of socks available if you feel cold. Allthough at the moment it looks like cats have reserved all the sheepskins for themselves. I do have couple old furcoats which I am planning on turning into sheepskins. On really cold freezing nights we use our hotwater bottles to warm up the bed. Cold weather doesn’t really bother me, because I will adjust my clothing accordingly. Hubby hates thick clothing layers. He is more of a jumper-kind-a-guy and likes to use jumpers ontop of thinner shirts. On the other hand, he has better blood circulation and does not require as much warmth as I do. He hates cold weather though. My challenges are that I have frozen my face, knees and toes when I was younger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hers and His. Traditional English hotwater bottles warm the bed nicely. Couple years ago when hubby ordered these, it was very difficult to find any in Finland. These came without fabric covers so I made them myself from scraps. Now during Christmas season every super market seemed to have these available. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I make my fabric cabbage from sewing leftovers which would go to the rubbish otherwise. My aim is to reduce the sewing waste. Fabric cabbage can also be used to fill pillows, cushions and tailors hams. You can use scissors, but rotary cutter and cutting mat are faster way to make cabbage.
