<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nHouse photos were requested to the calendar. This might not be what the person had in mind, but this time I am showing you one of the rooms which requires renovation the least. That’s why it’s possible to show you. After the large and extravagant lobby, comes tiny and modest hallway. Thankfully it is almost square instead of narrow corridor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have never really understood why Finnish hallways\/lobbies are made so small and impractical. Like they are not even trying. Those are the places where people keep their outdoor clothes, shoes, raingear and umbrellas, hats, gloves, pet leashes, children’s outdoor gear, school bags, often even hobby gear like balls and skates. Quite often people come to the are together, when family comes home at the same time or when guests arrive. That is the area where you put your shoes and coat on. You have to have enough space to bend over and put shoes on or sit on a bench. You need clothing hangers, baskets, shoe racks, mirrors etc. Often people also keep their keys, torches, and other similar stuff in there. And what more unexpected, some modern apartment buildings seem to have the cleaning cupboards in there (yup, our old home in Tampere used to have this).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If impractical kitchens are my pet peeve number one, impractical and tiny hallways\/lobbies are my pet peeve number two. Like our hallway. There practically no storage space here at all. Four walls, five doors. Boy oh boy how practical! One corner has just enough room for small clothing and shoe racks. In another corner, so basically in front of the door, is just enough space for small chair and on third corner just enough room foor tiny table and mirror. One door leads into utility room, another one to the toilet, third into shower room, fabulous panelled door into the living room and fifth goes to the lobby. Originally there has been a doorway to the kitchen where the shower is now. It’s been closed when they build shower and toilet. On kithcen side there is water boiler now. It is also very dark because only natural light comes from the lobby door. For those of you who are wondering, why don’t you keep your shoes and clothes in the lobby, we can’t. Not in the winter. Lobby is not insulated nor heated and it’s goes below freezing temperatures in the winter. This is the case in many Finnish old houses, entrance ways\/ lobbies are not warm in winter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We know that originally hallway (old lobby) wasn’t this small, because six years ago built toilet and shower room take just under half of it. We also suspect that small utility room used to be part of it and the wall was made later. Unfortunately when they made the washrooms, they also ripped the original floor boards off and replaced them with laminate flooring. I think that is probably the worst option for hallway because shoes bring sand in and it easily scratches the flooring. However we are not planning on renovating this area any time soon unless absolutely necessary. So for now it’s going to stay as it is. Anyway, I do like our hallway, atleast there is enough space for two people to put their coats on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Talokuvia on toivottu kalenteriin. Opposite living room is door to the lobby, utility room on the left, toilet on the right. It looks bigger in the wide lens photos than it actually is. In relation to previous photos, this gives more idea of the size, photo taken my back against toilet door. Several years ago I bought this lovely brass sconce which has 1920’s art deco-vibe. Unfortunately there was only one. I have a skill of buying single candle holders and be annoyed by it later. This metal bird foot holder I got about ten years ago from interior design shop. I would like to get more, but I haven’t seen identical ones anywhere. I also like these led-candles because they are easy turn on and off by pressing the sturdy “flame” downwards.
