I have to say that our own traditions are very simple and ordinary: coffee during the day, afternoon or early evening to sauna, after that is the main meal time and after that exchanging gifts. Our closest family is very small, and there is no small kids, so this is the middle-aged adults party for us. Last year we spent the Christmas at our place, and we still don’t have sauna, so we had to skip that part of the traditions. So it is very simple way really. Christmas day is even more simple because we don’t have to spend any time on cooking, but we can just re-heat yesterdays leftovers and shove it in the pie hole.

So I thought that perhaps some Victorian English Christmas traditions. I have already written modern English Christmas traditions about seven years ago here. Many of the modern traditions, Finnish and English, we can thank the Victorians for. They are not all from that specific era, but Victorians made them popular and spread around the Europe. Many of them have been long forgotten too.

Joulukortit
Joulukorttien lähettäminen yleistyi juuri viktoriaanisen ajan Englannissa.
Christmas cards
Sending Christmas cards was popularised in Victorian England. Christmas cards came to market already in 1840’s, but sending the was only for wealthy at first. However in 1870’s halfpenny postal fee came along, and then even the ordinary people could afford to send postcards. Popularity was guaranteed. People wrote what had happened during the year and what they were wishing for next year. The pictures in Christmas cards were a bit more macabre type, like dead robin, child boiling in the teapot or mouse riding a lobster.

Joulukuusi
Joulukuusi tai joulupuu on erittäin vanha perinne, mutta kuningatar Viktorian perheestä, koristellun kuusen ympärillä, painetut piirroskuvat levittivät kiinnostuksen ympäri Eurooppaa ja Amerikkaa. Kuninkaalliseen perheeseen tapa tuli Saksasta, ensin 1800-luvun alussa kuningatar Charlotten mukana ja myöhemmin uudelleen Prinssi Albertin mukana. Saksassa koristellut kuuset ovat ilmeisesti olleet joulun juhIakoristuksia jo 1500-luvulta lähtien. Tarinan mukaan Martin Luther keksi ensimmäisenä sytyttää kuuseen kynttilöitä. Ikivihreiden kasvien käyttö koristeena on kuitenkin ollut tapana ainakin jo Antiikin Roomassa jossa juhlittiin joulukuussa Saturnaliaa tuomalla sisälle ikivihreitä oksia.
Christmas tree
Christmas tree is very old tradition, but printed drawings of Queen Victoria’s family around the decorated tree spread the interest all over Europe and America. This habit came to the Royal family from Germany. First in the beginning of 1800’s with Queen Charlotte and later again with Prince Albert. In Germany decorated pine trees had been celebrated Christmas decorations since 1500’s. According the story Martin Luther was the first who ever though of lighting candles on the tree. Using evergreen plants as decoration, however, is ancient habbit. Atleast in Ancient Rome they celebrated Saturnalia by bringing in evergreen branches.

Ikivihreiden kasvien käyttö koristeena juontaa juurensa jo ainakin Antiikin aikaan. /
Evergreen plants as decorations is ancient tradition.

Lahjat
Lahjoja on jaettu vuoden päättyessä hyvin pitkään. Or what do you think about snap-dragon? Raisins are place on wide plate and soaked in brandy. Then brandy is lit on fire. Lights in the room are turned off and competitors are gathering around the table, trying to catch and eat raisins without burning their fingers. Hubby had never even heard of the snap-dragon before. Not even though I can swear it’s mentioned in one of the Agatha Christie murder mystery. Optionally you could play “Are you there, Moriarty?”. Two players lie on the floor, face down, eyes covered. They both have roll of newspaper. One of them starts the game by shouting “Are you there, Moriarty?”. When the other one answers, first one tries to smack them on the head with newspaper. Then is the other’s turn to smack. This is continued until they both feel silly enough.
Another popular game was Consequences. Paper is folded in as many folds as there is players. Who ever starts, draws a head and folds it hidden. Next draws neck/shoulders and folds it hidden. This continues as long as everyone have drawn their bit. Then all folds are opened and checke what sort of monstrosity was created. The Murderer must also be familiar to most. Players are sitting in a ring and one of them is trying to murder others by winking an eye at them. One is investigator who tries to figure out who is murderer.

Paukkukarkit eli Christmas crackers
Paukkukarkit keksi makeisvalmistaja Tom Smith Lontoossa 1846. Originally his plan was to wrap his sweeties decoratively, but he noticed that they sold better when he added little mottos, paper crowns and tiny toys. Cracker must be opened by pulling at the ends, when it makes little pop when it breaks. Even in modern days crackers are essential part of English Christmas.
