T\u00e4ll\u00e4 viikolla olisi ollut taas omavaraistelevien bloggareiden ryhm\u00e4postauksen aika, mutta loman j\u00e4lkeinen ty\u00f6h\u00f6n paluu vei mehut sen verran tehokkaasti ett\u00e4 en jaksanut mietti\u00e4 postaamista. Sen sijaan ajattelin tarinoida hiukan tapettiasiaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meill\u00e4 ei remontissa v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 tapetointivaiheeseen viel\u00e4 hetkeen, mutta tapettien valinta on niin pitk\u00e4llinen prosessi ett\u00e4 aloin mietti\u00e4 niit\u00e4 jo ennenkuin talokaupat olivat varmistuneet. Oikeesti! Jos olet ikin\u00e4 koskaan edes pohtinut tapetointia niin tied\u00e4t ett\u00e4 valmistajia on satoja, malleja on takuulla miljoonia. Alusta asti oli selv\u00e4\u00e4 ett\u00e4 satavuotiaaseen taloon valitaan tapetit jotka sopivat talon henkeen. T\u00e4st\u00e4 syyst\u00e4 olen kuorinut tarkasti vanhoja tapettikerroksia esiin. N\u00e4hd\u00e4kseni millainen maku asukkailla oli sata vuotta sitten. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanhat tapetit<\/strong>
Sanomattakin on selv\u00e4\u00e4 ett\u00e4 tapettimaku on nyky\u00e4\u00e4n melko erilainen kuin 1910-luvulla. 1900-luvun alussa muodikkaita olivat kangasta j\u00e4ljittelev\u00e4t tummat kasviaiheiset tapetit. Niill\u00e4 haluttiin j\u00e4ljitell\u00e4 kalliita kankaisia sein\u00e4vaatteita. V\u00e4rej\u00e4 k\u00e4ytettiin rohkeasti ja v\u00e4riyhdistelm\u00e4t saattoivat olla melko hurjiakin, esim burgundinpunaista, tummanvihre\u00e4\u00e4 ja kultaa samassa tai mustaa, tummansinist\u00e4, luumunpunaista ja kultaa. Nyky\u00e4\u00e4n taas pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n usein s\u00e4vyharmoniaan jossa k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n paljon saman v\u00e4rin val\u00f6\u00f6rej\u00e4 tai l\u00e4his\u00e4vyj\u00e4. Toki rohkeampiakin tapetteja on saatavilla, kuten valokuvatapetteja. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rips in the dark violet wallpaper and cardboard under it has been repaird with this newspaper. Thankfully the year is visible so it’s easy to determine that next blue layer was done in 1929.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Uudet tapetit<\/strong>
Vanhantyylisi\u00e4 tai historiallisia tapetteja ei l\u00f6ydy ihan joka remppakaupasta. Suomessa niit\u00e4 valmistaa Pihlgren ja Ritola<\/a> jolla on jo l\u00e4hes satavuotinen historia tapettivalmistajana. Siell\u00e4 tapetit tehd\u00e4\u00e4n edelleen samalla perinteisell\u00e4 rotaatiomenetelm\u00e4ll\u00e4 kuin tehtaan alkuaikoina. Siksi heid\u00e4n uusissakin design-tapeteissa on s\u00e4ilynyt vanhan ajan tuntu. Valikoimassa on paljon my\u00f6s vanhojen mallien mukaan painettuja tapetteja. Vaikka heill\u00e4 onkin kattava valikoima ihania tapetteja, en oikein l\u00f6yt\u00e4nyt heilt\u00e4 mieleisi\u00e4 jotka sopisivat talon ja meid\u00e4n tyyliin. Niinp\u00e4 k\u00e4\u00e4nnyin naapurimaan valmistajien puoleen ja tilasin n\u00e4ytteit\u00e4 Bor\u00e5s Tapeterin ja Lim & handtryckin valikoimista. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duro Sweden ei valitettavasti tunnu toimittavan n\u00e4ytteit\u00e4 Ruotsin ulkopuolelle, mutta heid\u00e4n malliston n\u00e4ytteit\u00e4 varmasti saisi jostakin kotimaisesta tapettikaupasta. Heid\u00e4n Gammalsvenska-malliston tapetteja on n\u00e4hty paljon mm. Talot huokuvat historiaa-sarjassa. Viel\u00e4 pit\u00e4\u00e4 tutkia my\u00f6s Sandbergin valikoima. Heill\u00e4 on ainakin yksi modernimpi Pine-tapetti jossa on kivaa vintage-fiilist\u00e4 ja vieh\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 tyylilt\u00e4\u00e4n ja v\u00e4reilt\u00e4\u00e4n kovasti. Hauskinta olisi jos l\u00f6ytyisi tapetti joka muistuttaisi alkuper\u00e4isi\u00e4 k\u00e4ytettyj\u00e4 tapetteja, mutta ne eiv\u00e4t ehk\u00e4 kuitenkaan soveltuisi sellaisenaan talon nykyiseen tilaan. Valitettavasti vanhat korkeat ja kapeat ikkunat on korvattu 70-luvun matalilla leveill\u00e4 ikkunoilla ja muutamia ikkunoita on laitettu tukkoon. Se tekee jopa vaaleasein\u00e4isist\u00e4 alakerran huoneista todella h\u00e4m\u00e4r\u00e4t p\u00e4iv\u00e4ll\u00e4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tilasin kummaltakin valmistajalta nelj\u00e4 n\u00e4ytett\u00e4. Koska historiallisiakin tapettimalleja on tuhottomasti erilaisia, p\u00e4\u00e4dyin karsimaan vaihtoehtoja todella rankalla k\u00e4dell\u00e4 ja valikoin vain kaikkein kivoimmat. Yritin olla tilaamatta turhaan t\u00e4ysin samantyylisi\u00e4 n\u00e4ytteit\u00e4. Lim & handtryckin n\u00e4ytteet ovat osin hiukan vanhempaa tyyli\u00e4 kuin talomme, mutta erityisesti tuo ruutu-kuvioinen 1800-luvun tapetti houkutteli kovasti. Vaikka ripustin tapetit nyt ruokailuhuoneeseen niin en ajatellut n\u00e4it\u00e4 kaikkia ruokailuhuoneen tapeteiksi. Mietin samalla my\u00f6s keitti\u00f6n, makuuhuoneen ja kodinhoitohuoneen tapettivalikoimaa. Ja salaa ehk\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4n my\u00f6s salin tapetteja, vaikka salia tuskin p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n tapetoimaan ainakaan pariin-kolmeen vuoteen, siell\u00e4 on sen verran isompaa remppaa tiedossa ennen sit\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi meill\u00e4 on kaksi muutakin huonetta joihin aikanaan pit\u00e4\u00e4 valita tapetit, mutta siihen voi menn\u00e4 viel\u00e4 pidemp\u00e4\u00e4n. Lis\u00e4ksi haluaisin tapettia yl\u00e4kerran aulaan, mutta siell\u00e4 on t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 kaikissa seiniss\u00e4 puupanelointi joka vaatii my\u00f6s isohkoja toimenpiteit\u00e4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 vihre\u00e4 lehtikuvioinen on vahva ehdokas makuuhuoneen tapetiksi, ruutukuvioinen keitti\u00f6n tai kodinhoitohuoneen tapetiksi ja vaalea 30-luvun tyylinen kukkakuvioinen ruokailuhuoneeseen. Mutta tilanne voi viel\u00e4 muuttua kun saan lis\u00e4\u00e4 n\u00e4ytteit\u00e4. Ei oo heleppoo! Mit\u00e4 sin\u00e4 valitsisit? <\/p>\n\n\n

This week would have been again the self-sufficiency group post time, but returning to work after holiday has really sucked the juice out of me. I didn’t have energy to even think about it. So instead of that I want to talk about wallpapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don’t necessarily get to the wallpapering stage for awhile. But choosing wallpapers is such a long and tedious process that I started thinking about them even before we and closed the deal on the house. Really! If you have ever thought about wallpapering you probably know that there are hundreds of manufacturers and possibly millions of designs. It was clear since the beginning that wallpapers we choose, need to suit the atmosphere and design of the house. For this reason I have also been carefully peeling the layers of the old wallpapers in the house. Just to see what was the taste of the family who lived here hundred years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third layer of wallpaper, pale rose and gold “confetti”. The precise age of this wallpaper is very interesting because based on what we found, this wallpaper was done over original electric wiring. One electrician claimed that electricity didn’t come to this neighbourhood untill in the 50’s. However if this wallpaper is older than that (which I suspect) that proves that electricity has been here way before 50’s.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Ontop of lightrose wallpaper is a layer of fiberboard and ontop of that is this beige, white printed leaf motif. I estimate this to be from 50’s or perhaps early 60’s.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Ontop of beige leaf wallpaper we found this beige joint-stripe wallpaper with golden dots. These type of wallpapers were popular in the 60’s. My childhood home had one similar too. This wallpaper has been painted over with horrid bluish green paint everywhere (that paint is everywhere in the house, inside and out) so it was very difficult to find proper sample of this one. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Old Wallpapers<\/strong>
It goes without saying that general taste of wallpapers is quite different now than in 1910’s. In the beginning of 1900’s it was popular to choose very dark colours and floral prints that imitate fabric. They were supposed to resemble old tapestries. Colours and combinations were bold and even quite wild, like burgundy with dark green and gold or black, dark blue, aubergine and gold. Modern style is more harmonic with same colour in different values or shades close to each other, rather than complementary colours. There are of course also more bold modern options, like photo wallpapers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far I have only unrevealed wallpaper layers in one room. Based on those the family of the house really loved beige. I mean REALLLY! 6-7 of ten layers are beige or white shades. Bottom layers is aubergine, on top of that is batches of newspaper from 1929 and ontop of that is blue wallpaper and ontop of blue is rose and gold. Ontop of rose wallpaper is layer of fibergoard and after that comes 6 layers of beige and white. Between rose and blue might also have one layer of metallic light brown, which I haven’t been able to uncover properly yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I almost didn’t notice this wallpaper because the one ontop has been glued on really carefully. White, pearlescence bacckground with gray and pink lily of the valley. I had to wet the layer ontop and rub it off to reveal this.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It looks a bit dirty on the photo, but this is actually the top layer. Blue and grayish beige flowers on white background. Quite pretty, but a bit boring. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

New Wallpapers<\/strong>
Old style of historical wallpapers can’t be found in every DIY-shop. In Finland they are printed by Pihlgren & Ritola, who already has almost 100 years of history as a wallpaper manufacturer. They still print all of their wallpapers with same rotation method than they did when company started. For that reason even their modern designs still have that old charm to them. Their selection has lots of old designs aswell. However I was not able to find anything that in my opinion suits our style and the house. For that reason I turned to the country next to us and ordered some samples form Swedish manufacturers Bor\u00e5s Tapeter and Lim & handtryck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately Duro Sweden doesn’t seem to send samples outside Sweden, however I might be able to order their samples from some Finnish shop. Their Gammalsvenska- collection is well represented in tv series Det sitter i v\u00e4ggarna, where historian and construction researcher reveal the history of old houses. I still have to check the collection from Sandberg. They atleast have one more modern design called Pine, which has lovely vintage feel and I like the colour options. Most fun would be to find similar wallpapers which were used here originally, however they might not suit as is into the current state of the house. Unfortunately some windows have been closed completely and old tall windows have been replaced with 70’s wide and low windows. That makes downstairs rooms very dark, even with light wallpapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I ordered four samples from each company. Because there are so many historical styles aswell, I decided to limit myself quite strongly and chose only the absolute favourites. I tried not to order too much similar samples. Lim & handtryck samples are partly older in style than our house, but that checkered style really caught my eye. Even though these samples are now hanging in the dining room, I’m also thinking other rooms like bedroom, kitchen and utility room. And secretly perhaps little bit of living room, even though we probably are not at that stage for atleast two-three years. There is huge renovations coming before wallpapering can be done there. We also have couple other rooms we need to choose wallpaper eventually, but that might take quite a bit longer. I would also like to have wallpaper on the upstairs lobby, but there is wood paneling all over, and it needs quite a lot of work too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this moment green leaf wallpaper is strong candidate for bedroom, checkered for either kitchen or utility room and lighter floral for dining room. But situation might change when I get more samples. Not an easy task! What would you choose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
