<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nReal pine decorations always make me feel festive. This year when we have our own little forest, I wanted to try making pine garland. You need piece of rope, thin metal wire (flower wire), wire cutters and huge pile of pine branches, pre-cut to about 20-30 cm long. I was a bit late on this again. I had planned to pick pine branches for the garland the weekend before last, but it turned out to be minus temperatures from Siberia, so I had to postpone. Last weekend they forecasted warmer so off I went. But naturally it was my typical luck again and it sleeted the night before. I had to do extra work by shaking the snow off of each branch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is possible to collect branches from living pine trees, just make sure you don’t collect every year from the same tree, otherwise it might get damaged. You shouldn’t do the collecting untill after the first freezing night of the Autumn, to make sure the trees have had enough time to settle for Winter. I collected more branches of spruces which are meant to be cut down later, and only little from couple other trees. Unlike berry-picking and mushrooming, here in Finland collecting tree branches is not allowed without the permission from the land owner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had just over two meters long rope, which took me several hours to cover with branches. It also took quite a lot of branches, about two loosely packed garden bags. So it is not exactly fast to make. I tried to finish it quickly so I didn’t plan ahead and I wasn’t very precise either. That’s why it’s uneven and is not hung very well at the moment. It is a bit over the doorway now, which I will fix when I have time. It is challenging because the daylight is very short period at this time of year. If I want to do it during the daytime, I have to wait for the weekend. Thankfully we have quite bright porch lights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So how was the making of the garland then? It was pretty timeconsuming and laborous, so I might not do this every year. Small wreaths are actually much faster to make and take less material too. But then again, this is after all our first Christmas in PineHill, so it was definitely worth it, even though it took me almost whole day. My granny had a habit of getting pine branches to front of the main entrance in the winter. They were for wiping the snow off your feet. These days they are replaced by bootscrapers and mudcarpets.
