Kes\u00e4 on aivan liian lyhyt, vai mit\u00e4? Tuntuu ett\u00e4 en ole ehtinyt tehd\u00e4 etenk\u00e4\u00e4n lomalla muuta kuin kantaa vett\u00e4 ja odottaa viile\u00e4mpi\u00e4 ilmoja. Eip\u00e4 sill\u00e4, ei minulla puutarhan suhteen ollut mit\u00e4\u00e4n erityisi\u00e4 suunnitelmia, l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 enimm\u00e4kseen tutkailla mit\u00e4 uudesta pihapiirist\u00e4 l\u00f6ytyy. Olisi silti ollut kiva, ett\u00e4 kelit olisivat antaneet my\u00f6den muunkinlaiset aktiviteetit kuin sis\u00e4ll\u00e4 pime\u00e4ss\u00e4 tuulettimen edess\u00e4 makaamisen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaatimaton keitti\u00f6puutarhani on k\u00e4rsinyt kuumuudesta ja kuivuudesta vaikka olen iltaisin selk\u00e4 v\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n\u00e4 kantanut sinne vett\u00e4. Automaattikastelua meill\u00e4 kun ei ole eik\u00e4 edes vesihanaa talon ulkosein\u00e4ss\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4n kes\u00e4n satoni on siis melko vaatimaton. Salaatti on kitukasvuista, rucolan s\u00f6iv\u00e4t \u00f6tti\u00e4iset, supikoira (tai harakat) s\u00f6i kaikki kahdeksan karviaismarjaa, kes\u00e4kurpitsa ei ole p\u00f6lyttynyt kunnolla, osa niist\u00e4 m\u00e4t\u00e4nee ja purjo ei it\u00e4nyt ensink\u00e4\u00e4n. Herneet ja porkkanat tuli kylvetty\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4n my\u00f6h\u00e4ss\u00e4, pottua en saanut aikaiseksi laittaa ollenkaan. Pensastomaatissa kyll\u00e4 on mukavasti raakileita ja persilja ja meirami sent\u00e4\u00e4n rehottavat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myskikurpitsa sen sijaan el\u00e4\u00e4 aivan omaa el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4ns\u00e4. Sen versot ulottuvat noin metrin lavan ulkopuolelle. Ne ovat t\u00e4ynn\u00e4 ns. poikakukkia mutta tytt\u00f6kukat ovat antaneet odotuttaa itse\u00e4\u00e4n. Kuulinkin vasta ihan \u00e4skett\u00e4in ett\u00e4 myskikurpitsaa on tosi vaikea saada menestym\u00e4\u00e4n avomaalla sill\u00e4 se vaatii tasaisen l\u00e4mpim\u00e4n kasvuymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n jo pienest\u00e4 taimesta alkaen. Ehdinkin jo ep\u00e4ill\u00e4 ett\u00e4 hedelmien puute johtui t\u00e4st\u00e4. Mutta ihme ja kumma! Toissa viikolla bongasin yhden kurpitsan alun. P\u00f6lytin sen heti kun havaitsin emikukan avautuneen. T\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen olen bongannut pari muutakin emikukkaa. Pidet\u00e4\u00e4n peukkuja ett\u00e4 sain ne p\u00f6lytetty\u00e4 ja ne ehtiv\u00e4t viel\u00e4 kasvaa ennen kylmi\u00e4 kelej\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4 todistanee ett\u00e4 \u00e4idin suosittelema keitti\u00f6tarhan paikka on erinomainen. Joskin kuumalla hein\u00e4kuulla saattoi olla osuutta asiaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyt sitten vain odotellaan ja toivotaan ett\u00e4 pikkuruinen sato kasvaa ja kypsyy. Voi olla ett\u00e4 porkkanat j\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t turhan pieniksi ollakseen edes babyporkkanoita ja herneet j\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t p\u00e4\u00e4osin ehk\u00e4 litujen asteelle, mutta ei mahda mit\u00e4\u00e4n. Ainoa mik\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4n enemm\u00e4n harmittaa on, ett\u00e4 vanhasta kodista tuomani rohtosuopayrtti ei oikein menestynyt paikassa jonne sen tuuppasin, joten en saanut korjattua yht\u00e4\u00e4n saippuan raaka-ainetta. Toivottavasti se selvi\u00e4\u00e4 talvesta. Pit\u00e4\u00e4 katsoa ensi kev\u00e4\u00e4ksi sille parempi paikka. Onneksi tomaattia ja kes\u00e4kurpitsaa sent\u00e4\u00e4n on tulossa. Iloitsen my\u00f6s kypsym\u00e4ss\u00e4 olevista ruusunmarjoista ja pihlajanmarjoista. Ollaan kuitenkin viel\u00e4 melko kaukana haaveilemastani omavaraisemmasta el\u00e4m\u00e4st\u00e4. Parempi kuitenkin menn\u00e4 pienin askelin ett\u00e4 en kertaheitolla ota liikaa hommaa. Ensi kes\u00e4ksi voisin lis\u00e4t\u00e4 pari lavakaulusta ja istuttaa yhden hedelm\u00e4puun. Niist\u00e4 suunnitelmista lis\u00e4\u00e4 toisella kertaa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer always seems way too short, don’t you think? It feels that I didn’t really have time to do anything on my holiday, except carry water to my kitchen garden and wait for cooler weather. Not that it matter that much gardenwise. I didn’t really have much plans for our garden, except investigate what it reveals. It still would have been nice if weather would have allowed other activities, besides sitting inside, in dark behind closed curtains, in front of the fan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My modest kitchen garden has suffered from heat and dryness, even though I have been carrying water every night like madwoman. We don’t have automated watering system, not even water tap on the outside wall of our house. So my this years harvest will be very modest. Lettuce didn’t grow much, rocket was eaten by insects, all eight gooseberries were harvested by raccoon dog (or magpies), zucchini didn’t pollinate properly (some of them are rotting away) and leak didn’t grow at all. Peas and carrots I planted a bit too late, potatoes I didn’t manage to plant at all. Tomato has nice amount of fruit coming and parsley and marjoram are growing quite ok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Butternut squash however is having a life of it’s own. It has grown about a meter all over the edges of growbox. It is full of stamen flowers, but female flowers have been rare sight. Recently I heard that butternut squash is notoriously difficult to grow outside. It requires very warm and even temperatures from the beginning. I suspected the lack of female flowers was due to this. But lo and behold! Couple weeks ago I found one female flower. I pollinated it as soon as I noticed it open. After this I have found couple more. Fingers crossed I managed to pollinate them and there is enough time before winter for them to grow. This might prove that location for vegetable garden recommended by my mum was excellent. All though the hot July weather might had something to do with it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now we just wait and hope that our little harvest grows and ripens. It could be the case that carrots are going to be too small to even be baby carrots and peas are not much more than flat pods, but such is life. Only thing that upsets me slightly is that the saponaria which I brought from old home didn’t like the place I planted it, so I can’t harvest any soap materials. Hopefully it survives the winter and have to find better place for it next spring. Atleast there is nice amount of tomatoes and zucchini still coming. I am also happy about the rose hips and rowan berries which are ripening as we speak. I am still far away from the self-sufficient life I dream of. But it is better to take babysteps and take too much work at one go. For next summer I could add couple more grow boxes and plant a fruit tree. But those plans are for another time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
