Jos haluat viel\u00e4 lueskella mit\u00e4 alussa tapahtui, l\u00f6yd\u00e4t aiemmat rene-sukkapostaukset t\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4: It’s been long time since I updated about the renaissance sock project. There is a very good reason for that. I didn’t knit anything on the winter before last nor the following spring. I was very tired the whole winter and quite unenthusiastic. I also struggled a lot. Not just with this knit, but all handcrafting. I couldn’t see properly and I always had to take my glasses off to be able to see anything. And even then I didn’t see much. Especially knitting this micro knit was extremely difficult task. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I had been waiting for too long to update my glasses. I’ve had a really bad luck with them past couple times. Some years ago when I was renewing my glasses, I asked would it be possible to get multifocals already because I seem to struggle so much when doing handcrafting and it feels I don’t see near very well. They just said that there is no need for that for several years. I got new glasses and still didn’t see properly. I went back to complaint and said I have to take glasses of to be able to see close. They just told me to take glasses of if I need to see close. This was most upsetting to me. It got me so annoyed that year later I walked into another optician to get new glasses. I told them about previous problems and it was most unusual to them. They found out that I had developed squint and actually need prisms in my glasses, which the previous optician did not notice. This was the reason why I could not focus close. So again I got new glasses with prisms and multifocals. And wow, what a difference. I could see again, much clearer and without having to take my glasses of if I was doing handcrafts. However it took me over a year to get used to the multifocals, which is quite unusual. Most people it happens in couple of months at most. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Now with new prism glasses I didn’t have any problems on seeing what I was doing. So I got excited and started knitting again. For some time I knitted every day. Then I actually thought I could perhaps even finish this stocking. However this thing with my glasses made me think about the artisans of 1600’s. When your income and livelyhood is up to your health, not to be able to focus near would have been quite devastating to a handcrafter. There has been glasses very early, and bifocals were available as early as mid 1700’s, but I’m not sure if they knew how to fix squint. Would the artisan with squint to be able to continue their profession? Would they even been able to afford glasses at that time? Perhaps, but maybe it wouldn’t have been so easy than these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Originally this project was supposed to finish in 2020, but covid decided differently. Project actually ended this Autumn. However, we suddenly decided to buy this house beginning of this year. To me that meant that I had to put most of my hobbies on hold for long time. So in the spring I made the decision to return this stocking unfinished. It was difficult decision, but I just knew I had to do it. I also returned my report about why it turned out to be such a challenging task to finish this stocking. Perhaps the scientists also got some interesting information of that for their study.
