Paljon hommaa toki viel\u00e4 riitt\u00e4\u00e4, mutta v\u00e4hitellen takapiha on muotoutumassa mieleiseksemme. Sanon “me”, mutta tarkoitan p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa itse\u00e4ni. Is\u00e4nt\u00e4\u00e4 ei puutarha kiinnostele juuri muuten kuin ett\u00e4 nurmikon leikkuu on tarpeeksi helppoa. Se on h\u00e4nen ainoa hommansa puutarhassa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kes\u00e4n ja tulevan syksyn aikana ep\u00e4k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6llinen seinustan vanha kukkapenkki v\u00e4istyy lopullisesti kun viimeisetkin perennat siirtyv\u00e4t muualle. Pid\u00e4n kovasti sek\u00e4 perinteisest\u00e4 sormustinkukasta, ett\u00e4 vain hetken kukkivasta id\u00e4nunikosta, joten niille valmistellaan uusi paikka toisaalle. Ik\u00e4v\u00e4 kyll\u00e4 id\u00e4nunikko ei pid\u00e4 siirt\u00e4misest\u00e4. Se kasvattaa pitk\u00e4n porkkanamaisen juuren, joka katkeaa helposti. Otan siit\u00e4 kuitenkin talteen siemeni\u00e4 silt\u00e4 varalta ett\u00e4 siirto ei onnistu. Kest\u00e4v\u00e4t sen mit\u00e4 kest\u00e4v\u00e4t. Sain ilmaiseksi er\u00e4n k\u00e4sin tehtyj\u00e4, vanhoja, luultavasti maakuopassa poltettuja purkutiili\u00e4, jotka ovat kaikki v\u00e4h\u00e4n eri kokoisia. Niiden asennus on v\u00e4h\u00e4n kuin palapeli\u00e4 kasaisi. Ty\u00f6 on vasta alussa, reunustin niill\u00e4 ensin uuden lavakauluksen. Savimaa on kuivan kev\u00e4\u00e4n j\u00e4ljilt\u00e4 hirmuisen kovaa, joten siihen hommaan menikin useampi ilta. Seinustalla on onneksi v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n savista. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tavoitteeni on puutarhahommissakin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 paljon kierr\u00e4tettyj\u00e4 materiaaleja. Lavakaulukset ostin edullisesti k\u00e4ytettyn\u00e4. Niit\u00e4 on nyt varalle mutama ylim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4inen, jos t\u00e4ytyy l\u00e4hivuosina uusia. Vaikka harmaantunut vanha puukin on ihan kaunista, niin t\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa halusin k\u00e4sitell\u00e4 ne ulkopinnalta. Kaapista l\u00f6ytyikin vanha, v\u00e4h\u00e4n kuivahtanut kalustevahan loppu, joka antoi puulle kauniin s\u00e4vyn. Is\u00e4nt\u00e4 askarteli pyynn\u00f6st\u00e4ni lavakauluksen toisesta kerroksesta puolikkaan. Siihen istutin taimiston kes\u00e4kurpitsaa ja ekaan kerrokseen kylvin kokeeksi kaapista l\u00f6ytyneit\u00e4 vanhoja siemeni\u00e4: tammenlehv\u00e4salaattia (joka on jostain syyst\u00e4 t\u00e4ysin h\u00e4vinnyt ruokakauppojen vihannesosastoilta), sitruunamelissaa ja basilikaa. Katsotaan it\u00e4\u00e4k\u00f6 niist\u00e4 mik\u00e4\u00e4n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taimistolta hankin puutarhakaarta kipuamaan pitk\u00e4\u00e4n haaveilemani ruotsink\u00f6ynn\u00f6skuusaman. Noin metrin korkuinen taimi ei luultavasti kuki t\u00e4n\u00e4 kes\u00e4n\u00e4, vaikka onkin jo kasvanut hienosti lis\u00e4\u00e4 pituutta. Siihen pit\u00e4isi aikanaan tulla kaksiv\u00e4risi\u00e4 kelta-punaisia kukkia ja punaisia marjoja. Ik\u00e4v\u00e4 kyll\u00e4 marjat ovat myrkyllisi\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mystery bush on our yard is still looking for the actual species. This Summer it bloomed the first time. Some sort of filipendula, but which?<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Lis\u00e4ksi ostin tupsulaventelia, italian olkikukkaa, krassia ja mansikkaminttua. Pieni ryytimaa, josta voi ker\u00e4t\u00e4 keitti\u00f6n mausteyrtit on my\u00f6s pitk\u00e4aikainen haaveeni. Lipstikka ja ruohosipuli minulla jo onkin. Lipstikan eli ns. lihaliemi-yrtin olin typeryytt\u00e4ni istuttanut pari vuotta sitten lavakaulukseen. Se oli kitukasvuinen ja tuholaisten vaivaama. Siirsin sen toukokuussa parempaan paikkaan ja katkaisin vahingossa juuren, joka oli alkanut kasvaa vaakatasoon lavakauluksen pohjalla. Toivottavasti se menestyy v\u00e4h\u00e4n paremmin uudessa paikassa, mutta kuivuus nytkin vaivaa, kun ei ole satanut kunnolla yli kuukauteen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hy\u00f6tykasvien lis\u00e4ksi ostin puhdasta estetiikkaa eli lobelioita ja mustasilm\u00e4susannan. Kes\u00e4 tuntuu virallisesti kes\u00e4lt\u00e4 kun ulko-ovella on vastassa v\u00e4rikk\u00e4it\u00e4 kes\u00e4kukkia. Kukkapenkkien rakennus jatkuu viel\u00e4 my\u00f6hemmin mm. aiemmin mainitulla unikko- ja sormustinkukkapenkill\u00e4. Viime syksyn\u00e4 kaverilta saadut kuunliljat tuuppasin nekin laiskuuksissani talvehtimaan lavakaulukseen. Niille pit\u00e4isi rakentaa uusi penkki my\u00f6s. Samoin toiselta kaverilta ja \u00e4idilt\u00e4 saadut varjoliljat pit\u00e4isi istuttaa parempaan penkkiin jonnekin kuusaman l\u00e4helle, se j\u00e4\u00e4nee ensikev\u00e4\u00e4n hommiksi, tosin penkin rakennusta voi toki aloittaa jo syksyll\u00e4. Etupihan pikkuruinen kivikkopuutarhakin kaipaisi viimeistely\u00e4. Siihen sopisi mehit\u00e4hden seuraksi joku matala kivikkoperenna ja ehk\u00e4 jonkin pieni hidaskasvuinen havu. Nyt aluetta valloittaa rikkaruohot ja itsekseen parvekelaatikosta kylv\u00e4ytynyt orvokki. Sek\u00e4\u00e4n ei ole huono, mutta melko vaatimattoman v\u00e4rinen ja n\u00e4in kuivana kes\u00e4n\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4n r\u00e4nsistynyt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pihan uusin tulokas on kuitenkin karviainen. Vaikka t\u00e4m\u00e4 ajankohta on ehk\u00e4 huonoin mahdollinen marjapensaiden siirtoon, en kielt\u00e4ytynyt kun minulle tarjottiin sellaista ilmaiseksi. Niinp\u00e4 kaivoin eilen pihaan j\u00e4lleen uuden kuopan, kovaan kuivaan savimaahan. Kompostia minulla ei ole, joten paransin savimaata puutarhamullalla, hiekalla ja laatoitukselle j\u00e4\u00e4neell\u00e4, sateessa kastuneella haravointi- ja laatanharjausj\u00e4tteell\u00e4. Kuopan pohjalle sekoittelin kanankakkarakeita kun niit\u00e4 sattui l\u00f6ytym\u00e4\u00e4n. Toivotaan ett\u00e4 ihan kaikki raakileet eiv\u00e4t varise pois ja karviainen selvi\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4st\u00e4 melko radikaalista siirrosta. Pihan toinen marjapensas, mustaherukka taitaa k\u00e4rsi\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4n kuivuudesta, lehdet ovat jo v\u00e4h\u00e4n keltaiset ja raakileita on kovin v\u00e4h\u00e4n. Olisi ehk\u00e4 pit\u00e4nyt kastella sit\u00e4kin, mutta periaatteeni on ett\u00e4 kasvien pit\u00e4isi selviyty\u00e4 hyvin pitk\u00e4lti omillaan ilman lis\u00e4kastelua, joten t\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa nyt n\u00e4in. Nyt ainakin sataa onneksi kaatamalla. Sit\u00e4 on odotettukin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Summer I have been more energetic than years. So I have finally got my gardening plans on the speedy start. There is still lots to do, but bit by bit our little garden is starting to look as we like it. I say “we”, when I mostly mean me. Hubby doesn’t really care much as long as the mowing job is easy enough for him. That is his only job in the garden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this Summer and coming Autumn the impractical flowerbed next to the wall is finally moving away, when I move last two plants to other places. I really like foxglove and papaver orientale, so they need new homes on other flower bed. Unfortunately poppy doesn’t like moving very much because it has really long carrot-like root. It easily snaps when moving it. So in case that doesn’t work, I will also collect some seeds. However when growing from seed, it only blooms the second year, so it is possible I don’t see poppies blooming on my yard next Summer. Old wallside flowerbed will be replaced by sand and red bricks. I am well aware that ordinary bricks might not last very long in the ground, but I really love how they look, a bit industrial and rustic. They will last what they last. I was able to pick up a free batch of old second hand handmade bricks. They are possibly burned in the hole on the ground and are all a bit uneven in shape and size. Working with them is like making a puzzle. I am only in the beginning of the job, just finished the edges or new grow box with them. Our yard is mostly clay-type ground, so it is very hard after long dry period and slow to dig. Doing the growbox took me several days to finish. Thankfully it is not so tough next to the wall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The way these ostrich ferns grow fascinates me every Spring. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

My goal is to use as much recycled materials in the garden as possible. That’s why I bought my grow boxes cheaply second hand. I got couple extra in case I need to replace some of them in the next couple of years. Even though old gray wood is pretty too, this time I decided to treat the outside surface. I happened to have a tin of old, half dry furniture wax which worked out perfectly and had pretty colour on it. I requested hubby to turn the second layer of grow box into smaller one. On that I planted zuccini which I bought from nursery. On the first layer I sow some old seeds of oak leaf lettuce, lemon balm and basil. They might grow or not, we will see. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My long term dream has been to get european honeysuckle for our garden arch. I found it from a nursery. About one meter high plant probably doesn’t bloom this summer, even though it has already grown quite a bit. It’s supposed to eventually have yellow-red flowers and red berries. Unfortunately berries are poisonous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also got lavender, curry herb, nasturtiums and strawberry mint. Little herb garden for kitchen herbs has also been my dream. I already have lovage and chives. I was a bit stupid couple years back and planted lovage into the grow box. I didn’t know it grows huge root. In the grow box it was not growing well and it was eaten by pests. So this Spring I decided to move it to better location. Unfortunately the root had started to grow horizontally and I accidentally snapped it. Hopefully it will recover in the new place. Allthough it has been very dry this Spring and everything needs more water than I can carry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also grabbed the opportunity to get some pure prettyness from the nursery. Lobelias and black-eyed-susan are pretty by the front door, welcoming us home during the Summer months. I also need to continue building new flower beds, for the pre-mentioned foxgloves and poppies, but also others. Last Autumn I got some hosta plants from my friend. I didn’t have energy in the Autumn, so I just shoved them to the old grow box for the Winter. Now I need to move them to permanent locations. Also I got Turk’s cap lilies from other friend and my mum, they would also benefit from better location. Perhaps near the honeysuckle. Those I probably move next Spring, but I can atleast start building the flower bed in the Autumn. Front yard has a small stone garden which also needs finishing and little bit of new life. Perhaps some perennials suitable for dry ground and small pine. Now it’s overgrown with weed and pansy that escaped from my hanging flower box. Pansy is not bad, it just doesn’t look at it’s best on dry season like this Spring ha been. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latest addition to my garden however is gooseberry. Even though this time is probably the worst time for moving berry bushes, I did not decline when it was offered to me for free. So yesterday I did some hard digging in our garden. Ground really is tough due to the dry period. I don’t have compost so I improved the ground with garden soil, sand and some wet raking waste which was left on top of the tiling. I also had some chicken poop fertilizer which I mixed in with the soil. Let’s hope that atleast some of the unripe berries will stay and ripen on the bush, and that the bush survives this rough treatment. Our other berry bush, blackcurrant also seems to suffer from the dry weather. Leafs are a bit yellowish and there is not much berries coming this year. Perhaps it needed watering too in Spring, but my goal is to let most plants survive on their own, without extra watering, so this is what we got this year. Atleast now it’s pouring down. We have waited that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
