K\u00e4sinompelussa sormet joutuvat koville. Paksut ja tiiviit kankaat antavat neuloille ja sormille v\u00e4lill\u00e4 niin kovaa vastusta ett\u00e4 sormenp\u00e4\u00e4t ovat melko reik\u00e4iset. Olen vuosia yritt\u00e4nyt etsi\u00e4 itselleni t\u00e4ydellist\u00e4, omaan sormeen sopivaa sormustinta. Huonoilla tuloksilla. Olen tosi tarkka siit\u00e4 mille sormustin tuntuu sormessa ja miten k\u00e4tev\u00e4 se on k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4, hankaako se viereisi\u00e4 sormia jne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opiskeluaikana opettaja esitteli meille nk. r\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4linsormustimen. Se on melkein kuin tavallinen sormustin, mutta siit\u00e4 puuttuu kokonaan p\u00e4\u00e4. Se on siis pelkk\u00e4 rinkula, v\u00e4h\u00e4n kuin sormenp\u00e4\u00e4h\u00e4n j\u00e4tett\u00e4v\u00e4 kuoppainen sormus. N\u00e4in sormenp\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4 s\u00e4ilyy viel\u00e4 tuntuma ty\u00f6stett\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4n tekstiiliin. R\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4linsormustimissa on kuitenkin yksi vika. Ne ovat yleens\u00e4 omiin kapeisiin sormiini aivan liian suuria. Joko ne valuvat liian pitk\u00e4lle sormeen tai putoilevat pois. R\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4lit kun olivat aikoinaan kaikki miehi\u00e4, heille tehdyt sormustimetkin olivat miehisiin paksumpiin sormiin sopiviksi tehtyj\u00e4. Modernimpiin pieniin r\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4linsormustimiin en ole viel\u00e4 t\u00f6rm\u00e4nnyt. Kerran l\u00f6ysin Tukholman viikinkikaupasta modernin r\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4linsormustimen joka oli vain v\u00e4h\u00e4n v\u00e4lj\u00e4 sormeen. Valitettavasti se osoittautui k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 aivan liian paksuksi ja k\u00f6mpel\u00f6ksi. Lis\u00e4ksi sen pintak\u00e4sittely, joku lakkapinta kai, alkoi kuoriutua irti melko pian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olen kokeillut aivan tavallista vintage-sormustinta, mutta en tykk\u00e4\u00e4 siit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 se vie kartiomaisella muodollaan koko sormenp\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 tuntuman pois vaikka istuukin sormeen muuten melko hyvin. Sen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 tosin edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 kynnen aivan lyhyeksi leikkaamista. Ergonomiseksi muotoiltu muovinen sormustin<\/a> on jotenkin liian kohmo ja samoin vie tuntuman k\u00e4sity\u00f6h\u00f6n, joskin asettuu sormeen metallista paremmin (paitsi se kynsi)<\/strong>. En l\u00f6yt\u00e4nyt omaani t\u00e4t\u00e4 juttua varten mist\u00e4\u00e4n. Siit\u00e4 voinee p\u00e4\u00e4tell\u00e4 miten paljon tykk\u00e4sin siit\u00e4 kun en edes tied\u00e4 miss\u00e4 se on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nahkaista sormustinta<\/a> en ole viel\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4ssyt testaamaan, monet ovat niit\u00e4 kuitenkin kehuneet, ne suojaavat ihoa mutta s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4v\u00e4t paremmin tuntuman sill\u00e4 eiv\u00e4t ole kovia. Sellaisen voisi toki tehd\u00e4 my\u00f6s itse paksuhkosta nahasta. Joissakin nahkaisissa on keskell\u00e4 metallinen py\u00f6re\u00e4 osio varmistamassa ettei neula mene nahasta l\u00e4pi eik\u00e4 luista painettaessa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haaveilen joskus hankkivani sormeen liimattavia, sormustimen tavoin k\u00e4ytett\u00e4vi\u00e4 pieni\u00e4 nahkal\u00e4pysk\u00f6it\u00e4, sormustintassuja<\/a>, mutta en ole saanut viel\u00e4 aikaiseksi. Itse\u00e4ni kuitenkin hiukan h\u00e4iritsee ajatus niiden mahdollisesta kertak\u00e4tyt\u00f6isyydest\u00e4. Joku tosin vakuutti, ett\u00e4 liima tarttuu kyll\u00e4 uudelleenkin kunhan tarran s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4\u00e4 p\u00f6lylt\u00e4 ja lialta suojattuna k\u00e4yt\u00f6n v\u00e4leiss\u00e4. Ehk\u00e4 viel\u00e4 joskus testaan niit\u00e4kin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyt kuitenkin on l\u00f6ytynyt t\u00e4h\u00e4n menness\u00e4 vakuuttavin sormustinkeksint\u00f6, pitk\u00e4kyntisen sormustin. Sain t\u00e4m\u00e4n lahjaksi \u00e4idilt\u00e4ni sen j\u00e4lkeen kun olin valitellut etten tahdo l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 hyv\u00e4\u00e4 sormustinta. Se on ohutta metallia ja sen ymp\u00e4ryys on s\u00e4\u00e4dett\u00e4viss\u00e4 (vaati kyll\u00e4 melkomoisesti voimaa)<\/strong>, tosin sit\u00e4kin saa kahta tai kolmea eri kokoa. Sormustimen k\u00e4rki on avoin, mutta siin\u00e4 on ominaisuus jota en ole n\u00e4hnyt koskaan ennen. K\u00e4rjess\u00e4 on pieni lippa joka j\u00e4\u00e4 kynnen alapuolelle. Vaikka t\u00e4h\u00e4nkin sormustimeen tottuminen ottaa aikaa, siin\u00e4 on kaksi verratonta ominaisuutta, kun kynsi ei est\u00e4 sormustimen asettumista sopivalle paikalle, se ei p\u00e4\u00e4se tipahtamaan sormesta pois ja nerokas lippa samalla sek\u00e4 suojaa ett\u00e4 auttaa painamaan neulan kankaasta l\u00e4pi. Jokainen varmaan osaa kuvitella mille tuntuu kun neula ommellessa painuu vahingossa kynnen alle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4 pitk\u00e4kyntisten sormustin on paras k\u00e4sinompelu-ty\u00f6kaluni. Mutta jos tied\u00e4t paikan mist\u00e4 saa pieni\u00e4, ohuisiin sormiin sopivia r\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4linsormustimia niin otan tiedon kernaasti vastaan! Tai ehk\u00e4p\u00e4 voisin teurastaa jonkun tavallisen sormustimen sahaamalla siit\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4n pois. Jos harrastat k\u00e4sinompelua niin millaisesta sormustimesta itse tykk\u00e4\u00e4t?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When handsewing fingers are under strain. Thick and tightly woven fabrics are tough for the needle go through, so fingertips might become sore and punctured. For years I have tried to find perfect thimble that fits me perfectly. With bad results. I am very particular how it feels on the finger, does it stay well, how handy it is, does it rub the fingers next to it and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was still studying, our teacher introduced us to tailors thimble. It is almost like ordinary one, but it’s missing the tip. So it’s basically a ring with tiny dents. Ring that you leave at your finger tip. It allows you to feel the garment you are working on. However there is one flaw on them. They are way too large for my slim fingers. Either they fall too deep on my finger or they fall off. Tailors used to be men, so tailors thimbles were made to fit for their bigger fingers. I have never seen any modern small size tailors thimbles. Once I found modern tailors thimble from viking shop in Stockholm. It was only little bit loose for my finger, but unfortunately in use it turned out to be too thick and quite clumsy. Also the finish, perhaps some sort of varnish or laquer, started to peel off quite quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have tried ordinary vintage thimble, but I don’t like the fact that you loose the feel to the fabric, even though they fit quite well. Allthough you also have to cut your nails short when using ordinary thimble. Ergonomic, modern plastic thimble<\/a> is somehow too clumsy and also takes the feel off, allthough it seems to fit the shape of the finger better than metal (except the nail)<\/strong>. I could not find mine for this post. That might give you the idea how much I liked it, when I don’t even know where it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I haven’t been able to try leather thimble<\/a> yet, many say it’s the best. They feel soft and flexible, while still protecting your skin. Leather thimble would be also quite easy to make yourself from thick leather. Some leather thimbles have round metal in the middle to secure your fingertips and prevent needle from slipping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been dreaming of getting little round leather patches with sticker-back, called thimble pads<\/a>, but I haven’t got around doing it yet. It disturbs me a little that they seem quite disposable. All though someone said the glue does last quite long if you store them protected from dirt and dust between uses. Perhaps I will try these one day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However now I have finally found most convincing thimble invention so far, thimble for long fingernails. I got this as a gift from my mum after I complained that I can’t find perfect thimble. It is thin metal and it’s adjustable in size (it requires some force though)<\/strong>, all though there are couple different sizes available too. Tip of the thimble is open, but it’s got feature which I have never seen before. There is little bend on the edge, which is left under the fingernail. Even though it took some time to get used to this, it does have two fantastic features. Your fingernail does not prevent the thimble setting on perfect place on your finger and the brilliant little bend at the end will protect your fingertip and helps you push the needle through at the same time. You must know the feeling when needle accidentally pokes you under the fingernail, right!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently this thimble for long fingernails is my best hand sewing tool. But if you know a place where to find small tailors thimbles, please let me know! Or perhaps I could butcher one small thimble and saw the tip off. If you do hand sewing, what kind of thimble you prefer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
