Viimeisin löytö on tällaisesta romulaatikosta kaiveltu rintakoru.

Sometimes you find treasures from them. I have found 70’s silver earrings with 0,50 € and traditional costume silver brooch with 1 €. Earrings are missing stones or pearls from the middle, but they still look pretty cute. Traditional costume’s brooches can be very expensive, larger ones even several hundred euros each. My latest find was made from one of those junk boxes. It is little cute brooch. Stamps on it reveal that it is from 50’s, made in Russia. Silver stamp 875 was used in that area. It is gold plated silver, very common way of doing silver jewelry on that area aswell. Pin of the brooch has been repaired with tin, which started cracking very soon. I didn’t notice anything else on the brooch, but lady in antique shop suggested that one of the branches got broken. In my opinion brooch looks rather balanced even though one branch is missing. It must have happened long time ago because the emd of the branch looks rather smooth.

When you buy thrifted jewelry you might want to check the stamps. After making silver jewelry as a hobby so many years I have learned to recognise silver by it’s colour and unique way of darkening. However stamps are the only way to confirm. Usually stamps are on the back of the jewelry, but sometimes you might find them on unusual place. For example on my traditional costume brooch is in front. It took me awhile to find it. Sometimes stamps on rings are next to the gemstone or even on the palm side. Gold stamp is oval, silver is square and platinum is diamond (I have never seen thrifted platinum jewelry) shaped. Most common silver purity here in Finland are 925 and 830, but you can also find 800 or 999. Other countries use other purities aswell but 925, sterling silver is the most common. In Finland it is illegal to sell silver without stamps so jewelry you buy new here must have atleast purity stamp and maker’s mark stamp.
