Sen antoi minulle lahjaksi ystäväni. Kabinettikortti on tuollainen hieman postikorttia suurempi valokuva joka on liimattu paksuhkolle kartongille. Kartongin kääntöpuolelle on yleensä painettu kuvaamon koristeellinen mainos.

Polkupyörän eturenkaassa on ilmeisesti lamppu. Kuva on otettu studiossa taustakankaan edessä ja herra ottaa toisella jalalla tukea pienestä maisemoidusta jakkarasta tai laatikosta. En tunne miesten pukeutumista tuolta ajalta niin hyvin etten voi sen tarkemmin ajoittaa kuvanottohetkeä, tämän tyyppiset “knickerbocker”-housut olivat kuitenkin tulleet Eurooppaan jo 1860-luvun tietämissä.

Ajoitukseen antaa tarkempaa tietoa kuvaamo. Kuva on otettu Helsingissä, Kluuvinkadulla sijainneessa Godtköpsateriernissä.

It’s been a whole year without any monthly bike photos, but I still have loads of them to publish. This is the number ten in the series, and even if I publish one every month next year, they still wouldn’t be done. So there is lots to study.

This particular photo is different to any of my other bike photos, because it’s a cabinet card and also the latest addition to my collection. I was given it by my friend. Cabinet cards are just a tad larger than general post card, photo glued on thick card. On the reverse side there is often printed ad of the photography studio. They were popular in the late 1800’s till the early 1900’s. And by the 1920’s you don’t really see them anymore.

There is lots of dust and other dirt in the photo, but other than that, it’s quite crisp. Sporty young fellow has poloneck shirt, sporty cap and knickerbockers with long socks. There is apparently a lamp on the front wheel of the bike. Photo is taken in studio with backdrop and he is supporting himself with other leg on a camouflaged stool or box. I’m not that familiar with the men’s fashion of this era, so I can’t give exact date, however these kind of knickerbocker-trousers became fashionable in Europe around 1860’s.

The actual photo studio gives more information about the age. This photo is taken in Helsinki, Godtköpsateliern, which located in Kluuvinkatu. It was owned by photographer Fritz Hjertzell. He was born in 1850’s in Stockholm and he started photographying in his 20’s, mid 1870’s. He bought his own photography studio already in 1877, which was the same one where he had been assisting and learning the trade. In 1881 he made long journey abroad to learn photography techniques. Later he owned several photo studios in Helsinki, apparently even at the same time. There is not much information about this Godtköpsateliern, and it’s not sure that this photo is taken by Fritz himself. One thing is sure though, this photo is taken before 1899, because then he quite photographying in Finland and moved to New York. He lived there till his death in 1904. Before moving he was quite influencing photographer in Helsinki. He also did documentary photography, in addition to studio photos. There is also a short mention about him selling a photo of the Russian imperial family, which he took himself, in 1880’s. Not very many photographers can get credit for that. There is more info about Fritz Hjertzell in Finnish photography museum’s (Suomen valokuvataiteenmuseo) Kuka kuvasi-archive, only in Finnish though. Unfortunately photo studio’s name is spelled wrong, that might be a reason why there is little to no information all about that.

Teksti on painettu kultakirjaimin, joka ikävä kyllä muuttuu skannauksessa ruskeaksi. /
It’s printed in gold, but unfortunately skanning turns it into beige.
