Now we are finally on the point of finished pattern and voluntary knitters have started knitting. Some are using raw silk thread, which is washed and dyed after knitting. It was interesting information for me that silk is knitted “raw” and the finished product is then washed soft and dyed. Makes it much easier to knit. Some, like me, are knitting with thin combed wool. Those will also be dyed later. All of the socks will be in some form or another in an exhibition, but there is not any information about that yet.

According to my sample-knits, the needle gauge I chose is 1mm. I had steel needles, which were borrowed from the project. However I got both steel and carbon fiber needles from my mum as a gift. Steel needles are pin sharp, carbon fiber is round on the tip. I tried them both and seems that carbon fiber generally suits better my knitting style than steel. All though steel is more authentic to what they had in 1650’s.

I started using steel needles because it was easier, tiny little stitches and round tips didn’t really work together in the beginning rows. And after combining the first row into round knit, it got twist on it. Even though I was very carefully straightening it. After two rows I just roughly straightened the twist. Thankfully it doesn’t really showon such a fine knit. When I had actually knitted couple more rows, I swapped for carbon fiber needles. When I get a bit further, I will swap again for steel and see if it’s any easier when I’m more used to the size of the stitches. Keeping the yarn at proper tension is very challenging, it is so very fine it’s difficult to get proper grip. I also have hard time of twisting it around my little finger for harder tension.

It feels like I have used hours and hours just for starting the sock, I haven’t made much further than the narrow ribbing. Thankfully we got the whole of next year for this project. If it looks like this sock will be finished quickly, I might knit also the silk sock. Have to see what the situation is in Spring. If you want to see the authentic 1650’s sock, it is on display in Turku castle till 8.3.2020.

Tuon pallon pitäisi muuttua yhdeksi pitkäksi sukaksi. /
That ball is supposed to turn into a long sock.

Here you can see about 20 rows, horrid miniature stitches.
Zigzag pattern for the back of the sock is barely visible.

Kevättalvella postasin Refashioning the Renaissance-projektista, jossa neulotaan kansalaistiede-projektina rekonstruktioita Turun tuomiokirkosta, Elisabeth Buren haudasta löytyneestä sukasta.
