Takana on huikea viikonloppu tieteis- ja fantasiakirjallisuuden parissa Dublinissa. Muistanette ett\u00e4 Worldcon, maailman vanhin tieteiskirjallisuus-tapahtuma vieraili Helsingiss\u00e4 2017. Siit\u00e4 l\u00e4htien olemme suunnitelleet matkaa Dublinin Worldconiin. Nyt onkin sitten kahden vuoden nousukiidon j\u00e4lkeinen masis. Coni jatkui viel\u00e4 maanantaina viimeisin paneelein ja p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4j\u00e4isseremonioin, mutta me jouduimme palaamaan kotiin jo sunnuntai-aamuna. Se harmittaa sill\u00e4 sunnuntaina olisi ollut viel\u00e4 paljon kiinnostavaa n\u00e4ht\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4. Yksi suosittu oheistoiminto tapahtumassa on ns. ribbonien eli nauhojen ker\u00e4ily. Niit\u00e4 saa tapahtumaj\u00e4rjest\u00e4jilt\u00e4, myyjilt\u00e4, ohjelmaosanottajilta sek\u00e4 muilta conivierailta. Jotkut k\u00e4vij\u00e4t yritt\u00e4v\u00e4t tietysti ker\u00e4t\u00e4 niin monta ribbonia kuin mahdollista ja j\u00e4senkortista roikkuvat yhteenliimatut nauhat voivat viist\u00e4\u00e4 maata. Muutama hieno ribboni j\u00e4i t\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa saamatta, mutta muutoin olen varsin tyytyv\u00e4inen saaliiseeni. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

N\u00e4ht\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 on paljon. Vaikka tapahtuma keskittyy scifi- ja fantasiakirjallisuuteen, ohjelmaan sis\u00e4ltyy paljon muutakin kuten historiaan, tv-sarjoihin, elokuviin, cosplayhin ja avaruustutkimukseen liittyvi\u00e4 paneeleita ja esitelmi\u00e4. Pelk\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n perjantain ohjelmaan oli kirjattu muutamaa vaille 300 erilaista luentoa, ty\u00f6pajaa, paneelia, konserttia, n\u00e4ytelm\u00e4\u00e4 tai muuta ohjelmaa. V\u00e4kisinkin k\u00e4y niin ett\u00e4 kiinnostavat tapahtumat menev\u00e4t p\u00e4\u00e4llekk\u00e4in joten on pakko valita. Lis\u00e4ksi tapahtumassa on tietystikin myyntihalli, josta voi ostaa kirjoja, sarjakuvia sek\u00e4 muuta oheistuotetta. Itse olin ehk\u00e4 hiukan pettynyt myyjien m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n, mielest\u00e4ni niit\u00e4 oli Helsingin tapahtumassa enemm\u00e4n, tosin muisti voi pett\u00e4\u00e4. Oheistuotteita ja fanitavaraa olisi voinut olla enemm\u00e4nkin. Nyt suurin osa myyntip\u00f6ydist\u00e4 oli kirjoja, joka tietysti kirjallisuustapahtumassa on ihan ok. Ostoksiin ja tuliaisiin palaan toisessa postauksessa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alla lista ohjelmista joissa itse k\u00e4vin. Is\u00e4nt\u00e4 osallistui osin samoihin, osin eniten itse\u00e4\u00e4n kiinnostaviin juttuihin. Jokainen ohjelma kesti 50 minuuttia, joten huomaatte ett\u00e4 ajan saa hupenemaan yll\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4n nopeasti. Jos todella k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 koko p\u00e4iv\u00e4n tapahtumassa, voi aloittaa aamujoogalla ja p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 p\u00e4iv\u00e4n konserttiin y\u00f6ll\u00e4. Koko ohjelmaa voi tutkailla t\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4<\/a>, tosin en tied\u00e4 miten pitk\u00e4\u00e4n se on siell\u00e4 n\u00e4kyviss\u00e4 tapahtuman j\u00e4lkeen. N\u00e4in j\u00e4lkeenp\u00e4in ajateltuna, omat suosikkini n\u00e4hdyst\u00e4 ohjelmasta olivat astronautti Jeannette Eppsin NASAN koulutuksen esittely sek\u00e4 tulevien kuulentojen paneelikeskustelu, kirjailijat ja heid\u00e4n lemmikkins\u00e4 (paljon kissakuvia!)<\/strong>, peruukkivinkit, fantastinen matkaopas jossa kirjailijat antoivat matkavinkkej\u00e4 kirjojensa hahmoina, huikea cosplay-kisa sek\u00e4 tietysti suosikki-kirjailijani nimmarin saaminen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaikka tapahtuma oli huikea, oli tapahtumaj\u00e4rjest\u00e4jill\u00e4 paljon haasteita valtavan ihmism\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n hallitsemisessa. Suositut ohjelmat aiheuttivat jonotuskaaosta, eik\u00e4 jonojen ohjaamiseksi ollut aina riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti henkil\u00f6kuntaa. Liian monta suosittua tapahtumaa oli aivan vierekk\u00e4isiss\u00e4 tiloissa, joten pienehk\u00f6n aulan kapasiteetti ei tahtonut riitt\u00e4\u00e4 jonottamiseen. Onneksi j\u00e4rjest\u00e4j\u00e4t osasivat kuitenkin ottaa oppia edellisist\u00e4 p\u00e4ivist\u00e4 ja jonoista ja muokata systeemi\u00e4 tarpeen mukaan. Vaikkakin talon henkil\u00f6kunta k\u00e4vi ajoittain sit\u00e4 sotkemassa. Suurin virhe oli pist\u00e4\u00e4 Masqueraden ja muutamien muiden suosittujen tapahtumien jonotuspaikka ala-aulaan jossa ei ollut tilaa jonottaa joten jono oli ohjattu ulos. Se ei ollut hyv\u00e4 idea mm siit\u00e4 syyst\u00e4 ett\u00e4 Dublin on rannikkokaupunki jossa tuulee l\u00e4hes koko ajan, ja ainakin t\u00e4m\u00e4 viikonloppu oli my\u00f6s melko sateinen. Onneksi he p\u00e4\u00e4ttiv\u00e4t avata sis\u00e4\u00e4np\u00e4\u00e4syrannekkeiden jakamisen etuajassa kun alkoi sataa. Pointsit siit\u00e4. Negatiivista oli my\u00f6s se ett\u00e4 joidenkin paneelien moderaattorit eiv\u00e4t oikein osanneet hoitaa hommaansa ja pit\u00e4\u00e4 keskustelua aisoissa. Jotkut paneelit siis eiv\u00e4t niink\u00e4\u00e4n k\u00e4sitelleet sille annettua aihetta. My\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n kaikki paneelien osallistujat eiv\u00e4t olleet yht\u00e4\u00e4n etuk\u00e4teen valmistautuneet paneeliin. Kaikenkaikkiaan tapahtumasta j\u00e4i kuitenkin hieno fiilis ja into osallistua uudelleen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jos viel\u00e4 n\u00e4in j\u00e4lkik\u00e4teen jotain itse haluaisi omassa coni-kokemuksessa petrata niin uutislehtiset! Niit\u00e4 julkaistaan kahdesti p\u00e4iv\u00e4ss\u00e4 ja niist\u00e4 saa hyv\u00e4\u00e4 tietoa p\u00e4iv\u00e4n tapahtumista sek\u00e4 muusta t\u00e4rke\u00e4st\u00e4, kuten ohjelmanmuutoksista niille jotka ei k\u00e4yt\u00e4 Grenadine-appsia. Tajusin uutislehtiset vasta viimeisen\u00e4 iltana, hyv\u00e4 min\u00e4. Toinen juttu on keng\u00e4t: vaikka ohjelmissa on p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa kaikille istumapaikka, suuri osa tapahtumasta on seisomista jonossa sek\u00e4 k\u00e4vely\u00e4 paikasta toiseen. Mulla oli mukavat matalat keng\u00e4t, mutta sateinen s\u00e4\u00e4 kasteli conikengiksi suunnittelemani balleriinat ja jouduin ostamaan vett\u00e4 pit\u00e4v\u00e4mm\u00e4t. Upouudet keng\u00e4t ilman sis\u00e4\u00e4najoa eiv\u00e4t ole hyv\u00e4 idea matkalla jossa on paljon k\u00e4vely\u00e4 ja seisomista. Rakothan siit\u00e4 tuli, jo heti toisena matka-p\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi ev\u00e4\u00e4t eiv\u00e4t ole huono idea, kun konferenssikeskuksen ravintolaruoka saattaa olla hintavaa.

We have awesome weekend with the scifi and fantasy literature in Dublin behind us. You might remember that worlds oldest scifi literature con visited Helsinki Finland in 2017. Since then we have been planning a trip to Worldcon Dublin. After two years anticipation and excitement, we are slightly depressed now. Monday was the last day of the convention, but we had to return to home already on Sunday morning. It is slightly upsetting, because there would have been so much to see on Sunday too. Also the actual event took so much of our time, we didn’t actually had any time to visit museums nor even the famous Trinity College library, which is awesome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what can I tell about the Worldcon? Or where to start, there is so much to say. Or actually there is very little to say, because the event was speaking for itself. But for those of you who weren’t there, it is probably more interesting if I say atleast something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like I told you on my post couple years ago<\/a>, event only sells memberships. Membership qualifies you to take part on the event every single day. The earlier you buy, the cheaper you get it. Most people taking part on the actual programs also buy memberships, there is no performance fees payed. Event is from members to members. There is no any other entrance tickets sold, although some events have sold day memberships passes at the door. However, if the event is sold out, like in the case of Dublin, there won’t be day memberships. We bought our memberships about 1,5 years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One popular pastime at the event is collecting so called ribbons. You can get them from random event staff members, sellers, program participants and other con members. Some members like to collect as many as they can, so that their ribbons are almost dragging on the floor. I missed out on couple cool ribbons, but otherwise I was pretty happy with my ribbon catch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a lot to see. Even though programs are mostly concentrating on scifi and fantasy literature, program also include other stuff relating to history, tv-series, movies, cosplay and space exploration. On Friday program alone, there was almost 300 separate lectures, talks, workshops, panels, concerts, plays or other programs. You can’t avoid interesting programs to clash, so you just have to pick the best ones. Also there is large hall for sellers. Mostly books and comics but also other fan products. Personally I was just a tad disappointed on the amount of sellers. I think there was more in Helsinki Worldcon. I might remember wrong, but in my opinion there could have been a bit more fan merchandise. I come back to the issue of what did I buy on another post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below you can see a list of programs I went to. Hubby went partially to the same programs and partially to others which were more interesting to him. Each program was 50 minutes long, so you can see that it is very easy to spend whole day at the event. If you truly wanted the whole experience you could start with yoga in the morning and finish the day past midnight with a concert. You can see the whole program here<\/a>, even though I don’t know how long after the event it is visible. My own favourites of the program that I saw, were NASA astronaut training talk by astronaut Jeannette Epps, panel about Artemis moonlanding program, authors and their pets (lots of cat photos!)<\/strong>, tips for wigs, fantastical travel guide where authors were giving travel tips and posing as their own book characters, awesome Masquerade (the cosplay competition)<\/strong> and of course meeting and getting autograph from my favourite author Gail Carriger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though event was awesome, the organizers did have lots of challenges on controlling the huge amount of people. Popular programs affected queue chaos, and there wasn’t enough staff for controlling the queues. Too many popular programs were located in rooms next to each other, which caused the lack of capacity for huge queues in the smallish foyer. Thankfully staff were able to learn from previous day and change the system for better working one. Even though the venue staff every now and then came to cause confusion. Biggest mistake was to put the queuing system for Masquerade and other large programs into the main lobby. There was no room for that kind of queue in there, so it was guided outside. That was not a good idea, because Dublin is by the sea, so it’s often very windy. Also this weekend was very rainy too. Thankfully they decided to open the entry-wristband stall early when it started to rain. Also another negative thing was that some of the panel moderators did not guide the panel much and sometimes conversation wasn’t about the actual title of the panel at all. Some panel members also were not prepared for the panel in advance. All in all, I have good feeling about the event, and I’m eager to go again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an after thought, what I would like to improve in my own con experience: newsletters! They are published twice a day and gives you good info about the venue, event and other important stuff, like program changes for those you weren’t using Grenadine apps. I noticed them only on our last evening, way to go me. Second thing: shoes. Even though there is mainly seats for everyone participating the programs, most of the event is standing in the queue and walking from one location to another. I had good flat shoes for the con, but rainy weather ruined them on our first day and I was forced to buy new shoes, more water resistant ones. Brand new shoes are not good idea on a trip which includes lots of walking and staning. So I got blisters, on the second day. Also having some snacks with you is not bad idea either, conference center restaurants might feel a bit expensive.
