Etenkin Amerikassa suosittua tuntuu olevan ns. prepping tai survivalismi. Perheet ker\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t suurta vesi- ja ruokavarastoa, rakentavat s\u00e4teilynkest\u00e4vi\u00e4 pommisuojia ja hamstraavat aseita puolustautumiseen. Omavaraisuus ja kotivara eroavat siit\u00e4 jonkin verran sill\u00e4 kotivaraa on tarkoitus jatkuvasti kierr\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 ja k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4, toisin kuin preppaajat jotka usein vain varastoivat pitk\u00e4\u00e4n s\u00e4ilyvi\u00e4 ruokavarastoja katastrofin varalle.<\/p>\n
Vaikka omavaraisuus sin\u00e4ll\u00e4\u00e4n ei varsinaisesti liity ekologisuusajatteluun tai muovin ja kemikaalien v\u00e4hent\u00e4miseen arkiel\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4, monet omavaraisuudesta bloggaavat ovat kiinnostuneet my\u00f6s niist\u00e4. Permakulttuuri, eli rakentaminen ja maanviljely luontoa kunnioittaen on mainittu usein ja muovin v\u00e4hent\u00e4minen arjessa on saanut jo oman haasteensa minimalismihaasteen tapaan. Osa on kiinnostunut itsevalmistetusta kosmetiikasta ja lihan sy\u00f6nnin v\u00e4hent\u00e4misest\u00e4. Itse olen kiinnostunut juuri muovin v\u00e4hent\u00e4misest\u00e4, mutta en toteuta sit\u00e4 mitenk\u00e4\u00e4n agressiivisesti vaan korvaan v\u00e4hitellen kotona k\u00e4ytett\u00e4v\u00e4t muoviesineet muilla materiaaleilla sit\u00e4 mukaan kun nykyiset tulevat tiens\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4h\u00e4n. Author bought a house in the countryside, and started renovating it. House doesn’t have running water nor drainage. They stock food more than usual. In Finnish it’s called kotivara, aka home reserve. They also try to lives as self sufficient as possible. They way where strikes or power cuts don’t cause immediate threat.<\/p>\n Jovela blog<\/a> (only in Finnish, sorry)<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 is very interesting reading, and I read it pretty much in one go. Which was a lot, since the blog has been started in 2013 (it took me almost five days)<\/strong><\/span>. Posts in the beginning were more about renovation, and later on moved on to food reserves and self sufficiency. I haven’t realized it’s such a big thing these days. On the link list of Jovela there is lots of other similar blogs. Self sufficiency interests me so I started thinking more closely. I have lived my childhood on a farm so I have pretty much grown directly to self sufficiency. We got meat and milk from our own animals, potatoes and all sorts of vegetables from the garden, we foraged berries from the forest and got apples and more berries from garden. Drinking water came from our own well and washing water from the lake. Sometimes we did fishing and mushrooming too. It wasn’t considered anything special, and certainly not as an ecological choise. Even though I have lived over half of my life in the city, the thought of self sufficiency hasn’t really left me. Even though I haven’t really been doing it much, and I certainly haven’t called it by that name.<\/p>\n For now, our self sufficiency isn’t any more than small herb and vegetable garden and mushroom wild herb foraging. Our cold storage space is also very limited so we can’t keep very large home reserve. It is still interesting to think about how are we able to prepare ourselves in our bungalow apartment for, lets say power cuts. Prepping and survivalism seem to be quite popular especially in America. Gathering large storages of drinking water, tinned and dried food, building bomb shelters and collecting weaponry. Finnish self sufficiency is somewhat different. Home reserve is in constant use and you maintain it at the same rate as you use it. You don’t have to go to the shop every week, since you can just use your reserve. If I have understood correctly, survivalists and preppers don’t really use their food reserves, they just make sure they got everything in case the catastrophe.<\/p>\n Even though self sufficiency doesn’t really have anything to do with ecological thinking or reducing plastic and chemicals in everyday life, many bloggers seem to be interested in those aswell. Perma culture, meaning building and farming in ways that respect the nature is mentioned often. Reducing plastic has it’s own monthly challenge, like the minimalism challenge. Some are interested in home made cosmetics and reducing meat consumption. I am interested in reducing plastic at home, but I’m not doing it very aggressively. When plastic items come to the end of their lives, I replace them with other materials. I have been planning making beeswax wraps and ecological sisal scrub sponges for quite some time now. Homemade cosmetics seems also quite interesting, due to that homemade lip balm experiment. Inspired by Jovela-blog, I am finally going to try homemade saponaria officinalis-wash liquid this Summer. I have mentioned before that it grows on our yard.<\/p>\n Last year I didn’t really do much gardening. I didn’t have the energy and we had really long dry season. I didn’t want to use our running water for the garden and we just didn’t get much rain. Couple drops didn’t really do much. We should buy our own rainwater barrel. But new try this Spring. I am dreaming of small greenhouse at the back of the garden. Our landlady has already given her permission, if not even urged us to do it. Next phase is to negotiate with nextdoor lady about destroying the spreading bush, with hubby about the construction agreement and with mum about the old woodframe windows (wonder if there is still some left?)<\/strong><\/span>.
