Olen vuosia, tai jopa vuosikymmeni\u00e4 harrastanut yht\u00e4 juttua josta en ole tainnut blogissa juurikaan puhua. Nimitt\u00e4in kalligrafia. Jotain siihen liittyvi\u00e4 kuvia on saattanut joskus vilahtaa, mutta suurimmaksi osaksi olen luovuttanut kaikki tekeleeni pois kortteina tai muina sellaisina lahjoina.\u00a0Innostuin kalligrafiasta jo opiskeluaikoina. Muistaakseni sain yhdeks\u00e4nnell\u00e4 luokalla koulusta jonkun kilpailun (olisiko ollut joku historiakilpailu per\u00e4ti?)<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 palkintona mustekyn\u00e4n jolla kirjoitin kirjeit\u00e4, muistiinpanoja ja p\u00e4iv\u00e4kirjaa niin paljon ett\u00e4 metalliter\u00e4 kului v\u00e4hitellen vinoksi. Kyn\u00e4 on minulla tallessa edelleen, mutta kirjoittaminen on sill\u00e4 vaikeaa ter\u00e4n kuluman vuoksi.\u00a0Kauppiksessa meill\u00e4 oli pakollisena joku mainostekstauskurssi ja sen innoittamana aloin etsi\u00e4 tietoa tekstauksesta ja kalligrafiasta. Mainostekstaus ei itsess\u00e4\u00e4n ole mik\u00e4\u00e4n j\u00e4rin esteettinen tekniikka, toisin kuin kalligrafia. Kalligrafia ei ollut silloin viel\u00e4 kovin suosittua Suomessa ja suurin osa myydyist\u00e4 tekstauskynist\u00e4 oli huopak\u00e4rkisi\u00e4 tusseja joiden j\u00e4lki oli v\u00e4h\u00e4n suttuista. Ter\u00e4v\u00e4piirtoisten kirjainten tekeminen oli huopatusseilla mahdotonta. Onnistuin kuitenkin hankkimaan itselleni oikean metalliter\u00e4isen mustekyn\u00e4n ja siihen italic-teri\u00e4. My\u00f6hemmin ostin viel\u00e4 toisen kyn\u00e4n py\u00f6re\u00e4ll\u00e4 ter\u00e4ll\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Hiljattain mietin ett\u00e4 haluaisin v\u00e4h\u00e4n opetella lis\u00e4\u00e4 ja p\u00e4\u00e4tin perehty\u00e4 joustaviin teriin sek\u00e4 mustepullossa kastettaviin kyniin. Kalligrafiasta ja hienosta k\u00e4sin kirjoittamisesta on tullut taas suositumpaa joten n\u00e4it\u00e4 tuotteita saa nyky\u00e4\u00e4n helpommin. Ostinkin v\u00e4h\u00e4n aikaa sitten oikean mustekyn\u00e4n jossa on joustava ter\u00e4 sek\u00e4 pullollisen mustetta. Ennest\u00e4\u00e4n minulta l\u00f6ytyi Englannista matkamuistona tuotu sulka-mustekyn\u00e4.\u00a0(Ei kuitenkaan aito sulkakyn\u00e4, jossa ter\u00e4 on veistetty sulan tyveen. Se voisi olla jp v\u00e4h\u00e4n liikaa.)<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Luulin ett\u00e4 minulla oli my\u00f6s pullomusteelle tarkoitettu kyn\u00e4 jossain mutta en etsinn\u00f6ist\u00e4 huolimatta l\u00f6yt\u00e4nyt sit\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Olen nyt muutamia kertoja treenannut pullomusteen kanssa ja pakko todeta ett\u00e4 nyt ymm\u00e4rr\u00e4n todella hyvin miksi elokuvissa ja tv-sarjoissa aina viitataan mustekynill\u00e4 kirjoittavien koululaisten (tai muidenkin)<\/strong> <\/span>harakanvarpaisiin. Se on jopa harjaantuneelle k\u00e4sinkirjoittajalle vaikeaa ja vaatii k\u00e4teen sopivan ter\u00e4n sek\u00e4 oikeanlaisen paperin. Sulavan j\u00e4ljen aikaansaaminen vaatii harjoittelua. Ter\u00e4v\u00e4 metallik\u00e4rki raapii paperia eik\u00e4 luista kovin pehme\u00e4sti,\u00a0 liian huokoinen paperi imee valtavasti mustetta ja saa kirjoituksen n\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n suttuiselta. S\u00e4ili\u00f6mustekyn\u00e4ss\u00e4 muste valuu koko ajan tasaisesti ja kirjoitusj\u00e4lki on automaattisesti siistimp\u00e4\u00e4 jopa huokoisemmalla paperilla. T\u00e4m\u00e4 tieto auttaa my\u00f6s ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n miksi jotkut vanhat dokumentit ovat niin vaikealukuisia. Kirjoitustapa on toki ollut erilainen, mutta my\u00f6s itse\u00a0kyn\u00e4\u00a0on vaikuttanut voimakkaasti kirjoitusj\u00e4lkeen. Harjoitukset jatkuvat.<\/p>\n

For years, or more like decades now I have had a hobby that I don’t think I have mentioned before. I’m talking about calligraphy. There might have been some photos around in the blog, but mostly I have send or given my calligraphy products away as cards or gifts. I got interested on calligraphy when I was studying in commercial school. If I recall correctly, I received fountain pen as a price on some sort of school competition (history related perhaps?)<\/strong> <\/span>on ninth grade. I used if a lot for writing letters, notes and diary. I used it so much, the nib actually wore out into odd angle. I still have it, but it is awkward to use because of the wornout nib. In commercial school we had course for commercial lettering. Around that time popular commercial lettering wasn’t very pretty, but that got me interested. I started reading about lettering and calligraphy. They weren’t really very popular at that time in Finland. Most “calligraphy” pens you could get, were actually felt tip markers. They didn’t make sharp, crisp letters, but quite bulky and messy. However I did manage to find proper calligraphy pen with italic nibs. Later I bought another fountain pen with round tip.<\/p>\n

Recently I was thinking that I’d like to learn more and find out about flexible nibs and bottle ink. Calligraphy and fine handwriting are coming more popular and these products are again available more than decade ago. I recently bought\u00a0bottle of ink\u00a0and\u00a0proper pen with flexible nib . I already had one feather pen which I brought back from England couple years ago.\u00a0(Not the real feather pen which has the carved nib, though. I think that might be pushing it. )<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0I thought that I had another pen with nib, but I wasn’t able to find it anywhere.<\/p>\n

I have now practiced couple times with it and I have to say I now understand really well all the references in the movies and tv to the schoolkids (or anyone’s)<\/strong><\/span> wibbly scribles. It is difficult for even experienced handwriter, not to mention kids. It requires nib suitable for your hand and right kind of paper. To be able to make it smooth\u00a0 it takes practice. Sharp metal tip scrapes the paper surface and isn’t gliding on it very smoothly. Too soft paper takes lots of ink and makes it look messy. Fountain pen gives even and smooth flow of ink and writing is automatically much tidier, even on soft paper. This information also explains why some old documents are so difficult to read. Way of writing has been slightly different, but also the pen and nib itself has affected quite a bit. So I keep practicing.<\/p>\n

Here you can see what flex nib does when writing. This is not the most flexible one, you have to press quite hard to get it open like that.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
