Vaato Oy on valmistanut vaatteita, p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa ilmeisesti takkeja, vuodesta 1941 l\u00e4htien ja sen suomalainen valmistus lakkasi 1984. Kansakunnan vaatettajat-kirja (1)<\/strong><\/span> kertoo ett\u00e4 Vaaton perusti Olavi Uitto nimell\u00e4 Kokkolan Teollisuus ja valmisti alunperin karvahattuja. Yritys muutti nimens\u00e4 Vaatoksi muuttaessaan Kokkolasta Helsinkiin. Wikipedia taas kertoo ett\u00e4 Ajatar, joka sulkee ovensa t\u00e4m\u00e4n vuoden lopussa, perustettiin alunperin myym\u00e4\u00e4n juuri Vaaton takkeja, vuonna 1952. T\u00e4m\u00e4 oli minun takkitarinani.<\/p>\n Now I’m a bit upset. I’m afraid my favourite coat has come to the end of it’s time. I bought this coat by Finnish Vaato Oy perhaps about 15 years ago. Or is it already 20 years? If I recall correctly, I bought it from local charity shop Uff, when they still were at the trainstation, on the second floor. If someone remembers when they have moved away from there, please let me know.<\/p>\n Coat is actually small in size, but since I am quite narrow shouldered and coat is wrap style, it has been just perfect. It is quite coarse wool fabric and it has quite unique cut on the sleeves. Despite of unusual cut, it fits like charm on sleeves. Allthough this special cut is also the weakness of the coat. Seam rips really easy under arm. I have had to repair it underarms several times, especially the lining. I have also taken in on the wide sleeves,\u00a0 painted the belt beads red and felted some flowers to the hem. I have also replaced the pockets once, because they were so worn out. I have used the coat a lot. On some milder Winters I have been able to cope just with this coat. It’s even seen on tv, in one episode of Finnish Blogistania show. When looking at my winter selfies, this coat can be seen in most of them. I don’t know what I’m going to do, because this coat is not really in wearing condition anymore.<\/p>\n Last and previous Autumns I didn’t wear it at all, because I had just bought two new-to-me vintage coats. This Autumn when I took the coat out of the storage, I was looking eye to eye to this unfortunate truth. Fabric is so worn out the natural hairyness of wool is pretty much gone. Belt has become so thin that beads barely stay on it anymore. Looks like in our previous home coat was attacked by some pests. There is couple holes which look like made by fur beetles. Also some of the felted flowers have vanished, assumably to the bellies of pests. One shoulder seam is ripped and underarms are badly wornout. Fabric is literally vanished. Perhaps again by pests. I wrote to the blog about felting the flowers<\/a> about six years ago. There you can see what the flowers looked originally.<\/p>\n Vaato Oy has manufactured clothes, mainly apparently coats, since 1941 and Finnish manufacturing stopped in 1984. Finnish book Kansakunnan vaatettajat (1)<\/strong><\/span> says that it was founded by Olavi Uitto and started by the name of Kokkolan Teollisuus, making fur hats. Soon it moved from Kokkola to Helsinki and changed name into Vaato. Wikipedia says that Coat shop Ajatar, which closes their doors at the end of this year, was originally founded to sell Vaato coats, in 1952. It was originally owned by brothers Yrj\u00f6 and Olavi Uitto. Now it’s owned Family Ihatsu. Even though I have never been customer of Ajatar myself, I do know their famous jingle “Ajatar is in Forum, In Forum at Mannerheimintie”. Probably one of the most well known jingle in Finland to date. At the end of this year finishes one important period of Finnish clothing history. There is some sort of melancholic poetry in the fact that my coat is also coming to an end. Ajatar has collected customers coat stories to their webpage.
