That’s what happened with my bowler hat and the top hat, and that’s what happened with these opera gloves. Finest of all leathers, these kid gloves are very thin and soft. They are rare to find as it is, but to find them in my size is even rarer. It literally has taken years. All other opera gloves I have encountered, have been either too small or too expensive.<\/p>\n This time I got lucky in Pori. My good old thrift hunch worked again. I must have mentioned it before. It is unexplainable feeling that I just have to pop up at certain flea market soon. And when that hunch appears, I better follow it. Saturday evening I got the feeling that I should go vintage hunting in Pori. So I checked what flea markets they have and chose couple for Sunday drive. First one was the lucky one. W\u00e4iskin kirppis has been in business only for couple years and I don’t really remember thrifting there before.<\/p>\n Opera gloves aka evening gloves are over the elbow in length, formal gloves. They are usually white, but there’s also been black and other colours in use. Modern evening gloves are made of elastic satin or matte jersey, but in the old times, they were made either leather or evening gown material (in solid colour)<\/strong><\/span>. It was requirement to always wear long, elbow covering gloves with evening gown. Unless the gown had sleeves, in that case length of gloves was matched accordingly. Old etiquette required that gloves were removed for supper and kept on the lap, under napkin. Gloves are put back on after supper, when getting of the table. This is done somewhere else than in ht e dining room, for example in the powder room.<\/p>\n Opera gloves (over the elbow)<\/strong> <\/span>have been in use since 1800th century, but they were more popular in Regency times and at the hight of their popularity at the end of the 1800’s till the First World War. After the war popularity started to wane and in the 60’s it pretty much finished. These days long opera gloves are mainly used by royals and brides. Most well known style of opera gloves is this mousquetaire. They are open on the inner wrist. Oval shaped hole is usually closed by three small buttons. It makes the gloves very fitting on the wrist. Name mousquetaire comes apparently orifinally from the gauntlets French musketeers used to wear.<\/p>\n I’m also adding another pair of gloves to this post. I found these last Autum from Nextiili vintage shopping event. They are also fine white leather and are from around 1920’s or 30’s. Wide arm of the gloves is typical to the era. It’s decorated with flat metal embroidery. Wire has been woven around little holes on the leather to create decorative patterns. Similar technique has been used for other clothes, like evening gowns too. One good example is 1790’s evening gown Before Automobile blog<\/a>. Glove embroidery is a bit more coarse though, than the one done on silk.
