I remember those well from my childhood, when I used to investigate mums and granny’s haberdashery boxes. Would you believe that wooden thread spools are the reason for development of Finnish paper and cellulose industry? Believe it, this story is true.

During the Christmas holiday I spent some time browsing the internet and I bumped into a link to a news article on Kaponieeri FB-page. It is only in Finnish but basically it explains that Finland became leading manufacture of wooden spools. We had loads of birch trees, which was the best material for spools. At one point there was 22 factories making just thread spools. Manufacturing them resulted quite a lot of waste so soon they needed to launch cellulose factories to handle the leftover wood. And to figure out what to do with the cellulose, they needed to build paper mills and other factories for cellulose products. Last wooden spool factory closed in the 70’s. By that time the plastic had overrun wood as main material for thread spools. But cellulose and paper mills are left, to continue the continuous chain in the history of Finnish wood.

I love to buy wooden thread spools every now and when. They often still have thread on them too. The colours of those threads match better to vintage clothes than modern ones. I also remember than in my childhood we used to use empty spools for handcrafts. It would have been shame just to throw then away. These days you don’t find them that plenty anymore (unless you pay lots of money on eBay for vintage ones). But hey, you can buy repro spools, made just for crafting. That is weird!

Ahkera kirppistelijä törmää toisinaan puisiin lankarulliin.
