Miten suhtautua kun maailman suurin, kaunein ja vanhin scifi-tapahtuma tulee Suomeen? Ensin seotaan tietysti aivan t\u00e4ysin (tapahtui jo kaksi vuotta sitten)<\/strong><\/span>, sitten k\u00e4rvistell\u00e4\u00e4n j\u00e4senyys- ja lippusysteemin sekavuudesta. T\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen panikoidaan j\u00e4senyyden hinnannousua ja lopuksi rahapulassa j\u00e4\u00e4d\u00e4\u00e4n kokonaan ilman lippua. Pelastukseksi saapuu lopulta harrastekuoro, jonka kokoonpanossa p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n p\u00e4iv\u00e4ksi ihmettelem\u00e4\u00e4n scifitunnelmaa.<\/p>\n

World Science Fiction Convention<\/strong><\/span>
\nTutummalta nimelt\u00e4\u00e4n Worldcon on maailman vanhin tieteis- ja fantasiakirjallisuuden tapahtuma, joka ker\u00e4\u00e4 yhteen spekulatiivisen fiktion tekij\u00f6it\u00e4 ja faneja ymp\u00e4ri maailman. Tapahtumaa on j\u00e4rjestetty jo vuodesta 1939<\/a>, suurimmaksi osaksi Amerikan mantereella. Viime vuonna tapahtuma j\u00e4rjestettiin Kansasissa, ensi vuonna se on San Josessa ja 2019 Dublinissa. Tapahtumassa julkaistaan vuosittain Hugo-palkinnon voittajat. Tapahtumaan voi osallistua ostamalla World Science Fiction Societyn<\/a> j\u00e4senyyden, tosin ainakin Helsingin tapahtumaan myytiin my\u00f6skin p\u00e4iv\u00e4lippuja.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Tosiaankin, tapahtumaan osallistuminen edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 WSFS:n j\u00e4senyytt\u00e4 ja englanninkielisilt\u00e4 sivuilta koko systeemin selvitt\u00e4minen oli ainakin minulle v\u00e4h\u00e4n hankalaa, vaikka pid\u00e4nkin itse\u00e4ni varsin sujuvana englannin lukijana. Onneksi kuitenkin my\u00f6hemmin selvisi, ett\u00e4 tapahtumaan sai my\u00f6skin p\u00e4iv\u00e4lippuja. Tosin t\u00e4ss\u00e4 kohtaa oli jo ilmoittautunut mukaan kuorokeikalle, jonka siivell\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4simme tutustumaan tapahtumaan lauantaina. Minulle t\u00e4m\u00e4 oli siin\u00e4 mieless\u00e4 iso juttu, ett\u00e4 olen aina haaveillut p\u00e4\u00e4sev\u00e4ni mukaan ison luokan tieteis-tapahtumaan. Olen toki osallistunut muutamiin paikallisiin kuten Finncon, Tracon ja Tampere Kuplii, mutta isommat kansainv\u00e4liset tapahtumat ovat aika eri juttu, moneltakin kantilta ajateltuna.<\/p>\n

Lauantaina t\u00e4rkein tapahtuma oli tietysti Pixel Sistersien oma laulukeikka tapahtumassa. Keikkamme oli buukattu noin 200 hengen saliin ja iloksemme sali olikin t\u00e4ynn\u00e4 niin ett\u00e4 muutamat katsojat, jotka j\u00e4iv\u00e4t ilman istumapaikkaa, oli m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4tty paloturvallisuuden vuoksi poistumaan. Yleis\u00f6 tuntui pit\u00e4v\u00e4n keikasta ja erityisesti yhden biisin alussa improvisoitu \u00e4\u00e4nenanto-Zarathustra<\/a> kirvoitti rehev\u00e4t naurut.<\/p>\n

Oman keikan lis\u00e4ksi halusin ehdottomasti p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 T\u00e4htiportti 20 vuotta-paneeliin sek\u00e4 kuuntelemaan ihkael\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 Nasan astronauttia, Kjell Lindgreni\u00e4. T\u00e4htiportti-paneeli oli fanille toki hirmuisen kiinnostava, mutta tunti moisen paneelin j\u00e4rjest\u00e4miseen oli aivan liian lyhyt aika. Varsinkin kun itse sarjaa on tehty kymmenen vuotta ja sen reinkarnaatioita SG Atlantista ja SG Universe\u00e4 viel\u00e4 sen j\u00e4lkeenkin. Paneelista kiiruhdimme l\u00e4hes juoksujalkaa jonottamaan Kjell Lindgrenin luennolle. Jono oli valtaisa, mutta mahduimme kuin mahduimmekin mukaan. Herra Astronautti oli mukaansatempaava, humoristinen ja kiinnostava puhuja. Toki aihe itsess\u00e4\u00e4nkin oli j\u00e4nnitt\u00e4v\u00e4. Hyvin rakennetun esityksen taustalla py\u00f6ri Kjell’n avaruuslennosta kertova video ja musiikki. H\u00e4n kertoi ett\u00e4 on lapsesta asti halunnut astronautiksi ja muutaman mutkan j\u00e4lkeen se lopulta toteutuikin. Koulutukseltaan Kjell on l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4ri ja vietti puoli vuotta Kansainv\u00e4lisell\u00e4 avaruusasemalla vuonna 2015. T\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen en jaksanutkaan en\u00e4\u00e4 paneutua muuhun ohjelmaan vaan hengailin kavereiden kanssa ja odottelin cosplay-kisaa alkavaksi.<\/p>\n

Kaiken kaikkiaan tapahtumasta j\u00e4i positiivinen kuva ja j\u00e4rjestelyt itse tapahtumassa toimivat loistavasti. Tosin sosiaalisessa mediassa on vellonut kr\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4 liittyen mm. noin vuosi ennen tapahtumaa er\u00e4\u00e4n pitk\u00e4n linjan tapahtumaj\u00e4rjest\u00e4j\u00e4n n\u00e4kyv\u00e4\u00e4n erottamiseen, sek\u00e4 valituksiin joita tapahtumaj\u00e4rjest\u00e4j\u00e4t saivat alzheimer-teemaisesta liveroolipelist\u00e4<\/a>, joka lopulta peruttiin kokonaan. En tied\u00e4 onko edes mahdollista v\u00e4ltt\u00e4\u00e4 kaikki erimielisyydet n\u00e4in isossa kansainv\u00e4lisess\u00e4 organisaatiossa. En halua ottaa n\u00e4ihin sen enemp\u00e4\u00e4 kantaa, mutta totean ett\u00e4 t\u00e4llaisessa kriisinhallinnassa organisaatiolla on viel\u00e4 opittavaa. Siit\u00e4kin huolimatta tapahtuma oli aivan huikea ja t\u00e4ll\u00e4 tietoa toiseksi suurin koko 75-vuotisen historiansa aikana. Tuli siis j\u00e4lleen todistettua ett\u00e4 pikkuinen Suomi ei ole mik\u00e4\u00e4n per\u00e4kyl\u00e4. Hyv\u00e4 Suomi! Mik\u00e4 loistava tapa esitell\u00e4 maatamme itsen\u00e4isyytemme juhlavuonna.<\/p>\n

Pakko todeta ett\u00e4 yksi p\u00e4iv\u00e4 ei t\u00e4llaisessa tapahtumassa riit\u00e4 oikein mihink\u00e4\u00e4n ja eniten harmittaa, ett\u00e4 en heti tapahtuman varmistuessa kaksi vuotta sitten ostanut j\u00e4senyytt\u00e4. Suomessa j\u00e4rjestett\u00e4v\u00e4 maailmanluokan scifi con nyt vaan on aika lailla kerran el\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4-tyyppinen tapahtuma. Nyt haaveilenkin parin vuoden p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 j\u00e4rjestett\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4n Dublinin coniin osallistumisesta, ett\u00e4 voin ottaa ihan kaiken ilon irti laadukkaasta ohjelmasta.<\/p>\n

How to react when the worlds largest and oldest scifi convention comes to Finland? First you go totally bonkers (happened two years ago)<\/strong><\/span>, then you feel troubled about the confusing system about membership and tickets. After that you panic about the rising membership prices and finally due to lack of funds you end up having no ticket at all. Your saviour in the end is recreational choir gig that allows you to join in and see the wonders of the scifi con.<\/p>\n

World Science Fiction Convention<\/strong><\/span>
\nOr Worldcon by the more familiar name, is if not the most, atleast one of the oldest science fiction and fantasy literature conventions. It gathers together fans and makers of speculative fiction, from around the world. It’s been organized since 1939, mostly in America. Last year it was in Kansas, next year it will be in San Jose and in 2019 in Dublin. Hugo Award winners are always announced in Worldcon. You can participate by buying a membership to World Science Fiction Society<\/a>, allthough atleast in Helsinki you could also buy daypasses.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, to visit the event, you really need to be a member of WSFS. For me it was totally new way of handling tickets and to figure it out from page which is not in my mother language was tricky, even though I consider myself as pretty fluent English reader. Later it was announced that day passes will also be available. Allthough at that point I had already signed in for the choir gig, which allowed us to see the whole con event for one day. This was a big thing for me because I have always dreamed of participating really big arse scifi convention. I have participated local ones like Finncon, Tracon and Tampere Kuplii, but they are totally different animal than large international conventions.<\/p>\n

The most important program for us was of course our Pixel Sisters choir gig. It was booked for conference hall for about 200 people. For our huge joy, it was full. They even had to turn some people away who didn’t have a seat. That was done for fire safety, but it was unfortunate for the audience of course. Audience seemed to enjoy the gig and our improvised getting-the-pitch-Zarathustra<\/a> in the beginning of one song made them laugh.<\/p>\n

After our gig I definitely wanted to see the Starget 20 years-panel and real Nasa astronaut Kjell Lindgren. Stargate panel was a treat for a fan, but one hour was way too short to handle the series this big. After all, the original series run for ten years and after that the SG Atlantis and SG Universe. From the panel we almost ran to queue to see Kjell Lindgren. Queue was huge, but we managed to get in after all. Mister Astronaut was humoristic and interesting speaker. Allthough the issue was very exciting too. Presentation was really well put together. There was a video about his stay on International Space Station with background music, while he was telling how it all happened. He told us that as long as he can remember he wanted to be astronaut. And so he did, after couple twists and turns. Kjell is medical doctor by profession and he spent six months on the ISS in 2015. After his presentation I didn’t really bother with the other programs but just hanged around with friends waiting for the cosplay competition.<\/p>\n

All and all, I was left with fuzzy feeling and positive memories from the event. All the organizing at the venue was perfect and worked like a charm. All though there has been negative things going around in social media. About year before the actual event one of the long time organizers was visibly sacked and there was also complaints about alzheimers-related LARP event<\/a>, which was cancelled in the end. I don’t even know if it’s possible to avoid differences in opinions and personal clashes in such a big organization. I don’t really want to comment any of that, except that they still have lot to learn about that kind of crisis control. Despite of that we already know that this was the second biggest event during it’s 75 year history. Which proves again that small Finland is by no means nothing to overlook at. Way to go Finland! What a perfect way to showcase our country on our 100th anniversary.<\/p>\n

I have to say, one day in event like this is not really enough for anything. I am mostly upset that I didn’t get the full memberships as soon as I found out Helsinki location was confirmed. World class huge scifi event in Finland just is once-in-a-lifetime type of thing. Now I’m dreaming about participating the Dublin event in two years. Then I could actually take full advantage of all the top-notch programs.<\/p>\n
