While I am creating living history at 1700’s event, my bike photo of the Month is offering you rather special treat. In front there is two people in horse carriage, smiling driver and women passenger wearing bonnet hat, turned to see behind her. After the carriage there is assumably a man driving pennyfarthing. On the roadside we can see a boy. Behind the cyclist there is boy in light coloured clothes, holding a bike and behind him, on the right edge of the photo, woman wearing large skirt.

What do we know about the time period? First pennyfarthing was built in 1869. The idea was to make bikes faster. Pennyfarthings were soon found out to be dangerous to drive and manufacturing was finished by the 1893. However they were still in use atleast in the 1920’s, they were handy for the speed in racing. Outfits of the people in the photo are confusing. Ladies outfit might give a clue of the era, but unfortunately it is very blurry. Driver, assumably a man, is wearing very peculiar outfit: possibly some sort of corner hat and huge collar ruffle. Cyclist has shirt, bowtie, vest, very tight trousers (possibly knee length) and ankle shoes which look to me very much like women’s ankle strap pumps. Cyclist can also be a woman, even though it seems like the person has Chaplin moustache. And lady at the back seems to have crinoline dress. It’s like people in the photo are all from different eras.

Backside of the photo only has Agfa-Brovira label. Agfa started making photo papers in 1913. So for sure we know that photo could have not been taken, or atleast printed before that. I managed to find out that label in question has been in use only until WWII, even though Brovira paper has been made still after that. Bonnet hats went out of fashion when Queen Victoria died in 1901. Same thing happened to crinoline skirts, allthough they came back for short visit during First World War around 1915-17 and again in 50’s. Consumer cameras became available in 1900’s, but started to become more common much later, in 1930’s. So this kind of snapshot photo would have been possible alreay in early 1900’s, but not very many could afford it, atleast here in Finland. We can’t really get any more precise time period for this photo, but I think it’s safe to assume this situation is somewhat staged.
