Sireliuksen Suomen kansallispukuja-vihossa vuonna 1921.

Omassa puvussani hieman virheellisesti on mukana säppäli.

In Finland we got lots of them. They vary depending on the location and it’s also very serious business, so some of the dresses are inspected styles and some are older, not so official styles. All still very wearable, when ever you feel like wearing one. My national costume or folk costume if you prefer, is inherited from my Grandmother, who made it herself. I still have the original package for the materials, which is helpfull if I need to repair the blouse of embroidery etc. I have already made the blouse longer because I am taller than my Granny, so shirt was a bit short and was lifting up.

Dress style is from Kaukola area. It is the only national costume of all dozens and dozens with asymmetrical decoration on the vest. It was first put together and published in 1921 by U. T. Sirelius in the Finnish National Costumes-booklet. Style has been re-checked in 1986, when they made slight alterations to the style, according to the museum pieces. I’m not sure if this dress was made before or after re-checking, but I think might be done before the re-check.

Traditionally women wear some sort of headdress with the national costume. Girls usually have ribbons tied around the head, called säppäli. Adult women have more covering headdresses like embroidered caps, lace decorations or veils. Kaukolan puku should have pleated veil, which is attached on donut-shaped hair bun (or faux bun if own hair is too short) ontop of the head. On my dress there is no veil but the ribbons for young girl. I think my Granny might have ordered the dress without veil, because it’s more expensive than ribbons. Allthough, someone in the FB group for Finnish national costumes mentioned that in the 80’s there wasn’t really patterns or instructions for making veils for this dress. I am planning on making a veil for it though, hopefully during next year. It is a bit tricky because it is going to be linen and need pleating every time after a wash.

I have often written in the blog about my dislike of dark blue colour. That’s why this costume is not the pretties one in my opinion. But since I have it, I am going to wear it. If I could choose which ever costume from all of them (and there is loads!) I would choose something not so blue. I like a lot of Loppi dress, it reminds a lot of Regency dress. My other favourites are Haapajärvi and Reisjärvi, Jokioinen, Suur-Ii, Valkeala and Puulavesi. I don’t really feel connected to any specific location, I’d rather choose based on my aesthetic preferances, but also the dress from our new home, Mouhijärvi, looks quite pretty. There is so many national costumes that there isn’t even photos of them all, one would have to contact National Costume Center to investigate them all. But if you are interested, you can find out more in Suomalaiset kansallispuvut-page (unfortunately only in finnish) and from the blog Kansallispuvussa, which is written by my friend who collects national costumes. She already has over 70 of them!

<img
