Nykyp\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 on vaikea uskoa ett\u00e4 radioaktiivisuus on ollut joskus muotia. Kun tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n mit\u00e4 se aiheuttaa kutakuinkin kaikelle el\u00e4v\u00e4lle, tuntuu jokseenkin karmealta ajatella ett\u00e4 radioaktiivisia aineita on k\u00e4ytetty mm. juomavedess\u00e4 ja kosmetiikassa. Etenkin 1910-30-luvuilla radioaktiivisuus oli oikein erityisen siisti juttu, koska se oli niin uusi asia eik\u00e4 vaaroista viel\u00e4 tiedetty. Radiumvesi oli suosittu terveysjuoma, joskin vaikutukset olivat p\u00e4invastaiset. Muistanette kun jokin aika sitten kirjoitin Sparklets sooda sifonista<\/a>. Englannissa myytiin 20- ja 30-luvuilla erityisi\u00e4 sifoneihin sopivia radon-patruunoita joilla saattoi itse valmistaa radioaktiivista “terveys”vett\u00e4. Suomessakin radiumvett\u00e4 valmisti ainakin Ab Radium-vesi Oy Pirkkalassa. \u00a0Muutama vuosi sitten n\u00e4in t\u00e4llaisen radium-vesipullon korkin Oksalan maatalousmuseossa<\/a> ja kuvittelin ett\u00e4 ei se voinut oikeasti sis\u00e4lt\u00e4\u00e4 radiumia. No olin v\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4ss\u00e4.\u00a0Lis\u00e4ksi ainakin Loviisassa toimi 1920-luvulla kylpyl\u00e4 joka mainosti radium-kylpyj\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Kuluttajatuotteisiin k\u00e4ytetyt radioaktiiviset aineet olivat uraani, torium ja radium. Kosmetiikassa radiumia tuupattiin kaikkeen mahdolliseen kasvovoiteista, huulipunaan ja hammastahnaan. Itsevalaiseva aine kun sai aikaan upean hehkun sek\u00e4 hampaisiin ett\u00e4 iholle. Radiumilla kyll\u00e4stetyill\u00e4 vaatteilla tai k\u00e4\u00e4reill\u00e4 hoidettiin reumatismia ja sit\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4ttiin tabletteina huonoista hermoista k\u00e4rsiville. Se oli ihmeaine jonka uskottiin auttavan kaikkeen. \u00a0Toki se pienin\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4rin\u00e4 tehosikin, sen avulla pystyttiin esimerkiksi tappamaan sy\u00f6p\u00e4soluja. Onneksi suurin osa tuotteista oli sen verran kalliita aikanaan ett\u00e4 altistuneiden uhrien m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 oli ainakin Suomessa v\u00e4h\u00e4inen. Ihan kaikki radiumin suosiolla ratsastaneet tuotteet eiv\u00e4t sis\u00e4lt\u00e4neet radiumia, onneksi.<\/p>\n

Amerikkaa\u00a0kohahdutti 20- ja 30-luvuilla tapaus, jonka p\u00e4\u00e4henkil\u00f6it\u00e4 kutsuttiin nimell\u00e4 Radium-tyt\u00f6t. US. Radium Corporation valmisti Ensimm\u00e4isen maailmansodan aikana armeijan k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n itsevalaisevia kelloja ja palkkasi niit\u00e4 maalaamaan joukon nuoria naisia. Uusi itsevalaiseva maali valmistettiin radiumista, mutta ty\u00f6ntekij\u00f6ille kerrottiin ett\u00e4 maali on t\u00e4ysin vaaratonta. Ty\u00f6ntekij\u00e4t saivat palkan sen mukaan miten paljon kellotauluja he ehtiv\u00e4t maalaamaan. Saadakseen aikaan tarkkaa j\u00e4lke\u00e4 nopeasti naisia ohjeistettiin nuolaisemaan\u00a0maalisiveltimi\u00e4, jotta siveltimen k\u00e4rki pysyisi ter\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4. Siin\u00e4 samalla he tulivat nielleeksi radioaktiivista maalia ja alkoivat v\u00e4hitellen sairastua. Tapaus aiheutti suuren skandaalin ja oikeusjutun. Radium-tyt\u00f6t voittivat jutun, mutta vain kaksi vuotta sen j\u00e4lkeen viimeinenkin heist\u00e4 oli jo kuollut radium-myrkytykseen. T\u00e4m\u00e4 ik\u00e4v\u00e4 tapaus kuitenkin auttoi kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n ty\u00f6suojelua ja turvavarusteita. Vaikka yritys jatkoi radioaktiivisen maalin k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4, ei t\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen yksik\u00e4\u00e4n ty\u00f6ntekij\u00e4 sairastunut radioaktiivisuudesta.<\/p>\n

Samoihin aikoihin Radium-tytt\u00f6jen tapauksen kanssa sattui toinenkin radiumiin liittyv\u00e4 kuolemantapaus. Tunnettu amerikkalainen naistenmies ja amat\u00f6\u00f6rigolfari Eben Byers alkoi nauttia Radithor-vett\u00e4 l\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4rins\u00e4 suosituksesta, pienen tapaturman aiheuttamien kipujen hoitoon. H\u00e4n nautti sit\u00e4\u00a02-3 pulloa p\u00e4iv\u00e4ss\u00e4 noin viiden vuoden ajan, kunnes kuoli vuonna 1932 vakavaan radium-myrkytykseen. En nyt t\u00e4ss\u00e4 l\u00e4hde kuvailemaan millaisista oireista Byers k\u00e4rsi kuollessaan, mutta se ei ollut kaunista katsottavaa. N\u00e4m\u00e4 paljon uutisoidut tapaukset kuitenkin auttoivat yleis\u00f6\u00e4 saamaan tietoa radiumin ja muiden radioaktiivisten aineiden vaarallisuudesta.<\/p>\n

Radioaktiivisuus<\/strong><\/span> – ionisoivan s\u00e4teilyn tyyppi, ihmisille ja el\u00e4imille\u00a0haitallista, aiheuttaa sy\u00f6p\u00e4\u00e4 ja muita sairauksia. Radioaktiivinen s\u00e4teily l\u00f6ydettiin 1896 ja ensin sit\u00e4 pidettiin ihmiselle vaarattomana ja suorastaan jopa hy\u00f6dyllisen\u00e4 ja terveellisen\u00e4. Vaarat opittiin tuntemaan varsin pian tiedeyhteis\u00f6n keskuudessa, mutta silti sit\u00e4 valheellisesti markkinoitiin\u00a0yleis\u00f6lle\u00a0hyv\u00e4\u00e4 tekev\u00e4n\u00e4, l\u00e4\u00e4kinn\u00e4llisen\u00e4 asiana.
\nRadium<\/strong><\/span> – radioaktiivinen alkuaine jonka l\u00f6ysiv\u00e4t Marie & Pierre Curie 1898, hopeanvalkoinen pehme\u00e4 metalli jota k\u00e4ytettiin mm. itsevalaisevan maalin valmistukseen, hajoaa edelleen radoniksi. Pian l\u00f6yt\u00e4misen j\u00e4lkeen radium oli suosittu “lis\u00e4”aine kosmetiikassa ja jopa ruuassa. Erityisen haitalliseksi ihmiselle sen tekee “sukulaisuus” kalsiumille sill\u00e4 kalsiumin tavoin se voi kulkeutua ja ker\u00e4\u00e4nty\u00e4 luustoon.
\nTorium<\/strong><\/span> – radioaktiivinen alkuaine jonka l\u00f6ysi ruotsalainen kemisti Berzelius, joka nimesin sen ukkosenjumala Thorin mukaan
\nUraani<\/strong><\/span> – radioaktiivinen alkuaine ja myrkyllinen raskasmetalli, jonka l\u00f6yt\u00e4j\u00e4n\u00e4 pidet\u00e4\u00e4n saksalaista apteekkaria ja kemisti\u00e4 Martin\u00a0Klaprothia, uraanin radioaktiivisuuden havaitsi Henri Becquerel vuonna 1896. Uraani hajoaa edelleen radiumiksi.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In modern days it’s hard to believe that radioactivity was fashionable thing in the past. When we know what it does to most living things, it feels quite horrid to think that radioactive material was used in drinking water, cosmetics etc. Especially in 1910-30 it was most fashionable\u00a0thing to use radioactive products, it was such new thing and people didn’t know about the danger. Radium water was popular health drink, even though long term affects were quite the opposite. You might remember that I wrote about our Sparklets soda siphon<\/a>\u00a0recently. In England they used to sell special Radon cartridges in the 20’s and 30’s for the Sparklets siphons. So people could make their own radioactive “health” water. There was also atleast one company in Finland manufacturing radium water, located quite close to our current neighbourhood. And a spa in Loviisa was marketing radium baths. Couple years ago I saw porcelain cap for radium water bottle at\u00a0Oksala farm<\/a>, but I just thought it couldn’t have contained\u00a0real radium. Well, I was wrong.<\/p>\n

Radioactive materials used in consumer products were uranium, thorium and radium. In cosmetics there was radium in pretty much everything from face creams to lipstick and toothpaste. Self-illuminating substance created lovely glow on the skin and teeth. Clothes and wraps, treated with radium, were used to “cure” rheumatism. Radium tablets were prescribed for those with bad nerves. It was assumably miracle cure for everything. And in some cases it was, for example in small doses it could kill cancer cells. Thankfully most of those products were so expensive that atleast here in Finland the casualties of radiation poisoning were quite low. And not all products which used radium as marketing ploy actually had anything radioactive in them, thankfully.<\/p>\n

America was shocked in the 20’s and 30’s about a case with women know as Radium girls. US. Radium Corporation was the manufacturer of self-luminous\u00a0clocks\u00a0for soldiers in WW1. To supply for the demand, they hired quite a bunch of young women. New self-luminous\u00a0paint was made of radium, but workers were told it was totally harmless. Workers got paid by the amount of clock dials they painted per day, and they were told to lick the brush to keep it pointy and sharp for best results. While doing that they consumed some amounts of radium every day. Several years later they got sick. It was a big scandal and caused law suite. In the end Radium girls won, but only two years after the last of them was already dead of radium poisoning. This unfortunate case however, helped to develop better work protection and safety gear. Even though company continued using radioactive paint, after this none of the workers got sick from radiation.<\/p>\n

Around the same time than the Radium girs case, there was another radium-related death. Well-known American ladies man and amateur golfer Eben Byers started drinking Radithor-water according to his doctors recommendation, for pain treatment after small injury. He drank about 2-3 bottles per day for about five years, untill his death of sever radium poisoning in 1932. I won’t describe what kind of symptoms he had, but it was not pretty. These two events were widely reported in the news and that helped audience to receive more information of the dangers of radium and radiation.<\/p>\n

Radioactivity<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0– type of ionizing radiation, harmfull to most living things, causes cancer and other ilnesses. Radiactive radiation was found in 1896 and at first it was considered harmless and even usefull and healthy. Scientists learned the dangers pretty soon, but it was still falsely advertised good and even medicinal thing.
\nRadium<\/strong><\/span> – radioactive element, found by \u00a0Marie & Pierre Curie in 1898, silvery white soft meta, which was used for example to self-luminous paint. It decays into radon. Soon after the discovery radium became popular “additive” to cosmetics and even food. It’s especially harmfull to humans because it’s “relative” to calsium and can accumulate\u00a0in bones.
\nThorium<\/strong><\/span> – radioactive element, found by Swedish chemist\u00a0Berzelius, who named it after God of thunder, Thor.
\nUranium<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0– radioactive element and toxic heavy metal. German pharmacist and chemist Martin Klaproth is considered the finder, in the 1780’s. Henri Becquerel realized it was radioactive in 1896. Uranium decays into radium.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
