J\u016brmalan j\u00e4lkeen p\u00e4\u00e4simme k\u00e4ym\u00e4\u00e4n Riikan er\u00e4ist\u00e4 n\u00e4kyvimmist\u00e4 Neuvostoaikain reliikeist\u00e4: tv- ja radiotornissa joka\u00a0on EU:n korkein rakennelma, reilut 360 metri\u00e4. Torni on rakennettu 1979-1989 Neuvostoliiton keskushallinnon rahoituksella. Radiol\u00e4hetykset tornista tosin alkoivat jo vuonna -86. Vaikka tornin oppaalla ja meill\u00e4 ei ollut montaakaan sanaa yhteist\u00e4 kielt\u00e4, onnistui h\u00e4n kertomaan meille, ett\u00e4 siihen on k\u00e4ytetty ven\u00e4l\u00e4ist\u00e4\u00a0ter\u00e4st\u00e4, virolaista dolomiittia ja suomalaista graniittia. Vierailup\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 tornin masto oli pilvipeitteen keskell\u00e4. N\u00e4k\u00f6alatasanteelle p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n vinon tukipilarin sis\u00e4ll\u00e4 kulkevalla hissill\u00e4 (hissi on itseasiassa kahdessa pilarissa, mutta saimme k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 vain toista)<\/strong><\/span>. N\u00e4k\u00f6alatasanne on 98 metrin korkeudessa ja hissimatka sinne kest\u00e4\u00e4 42 sekuntia. P\u00e4iv\u00e4 oli varsin tuulinen, joten t\u00e4llainen yliherk\u00e4ll\u00e4 tasapainoaistilla varustettu tunsi kyll\u00e4 jokaisen tornin liikahduksen. Voitte kuvitella miten kuljin n\u00e4k\u00f6alatasanteella hiukkasen hoiperrellen. Maisemat tornista olivat upeat yli kaupungin. Ja pakko my\u00f6nt\u00e4\u00e4 ett\u00e4 vaikka neukku-arkkitehtuuri on p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa varsin rumaa niin jokin siin\u00e4 karuudessa vieh\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4.<\/p>\n

After visit to J\u016brmala we went to see one of the most visible relics of Soviet era: radio and tv tower of Riga. It is the tallest building in EU, over 300 meters. Tower was built during 1979-1989 with the finances from Soviet Union central administration. Allthough the radio transmissions started already in -86. Even though the tower guide and us didn’t really have many words of common language, she managed to tell us that it’s made with Soviet steel, Estonian dolomite and Finnish granite. The top of the tower was covered in clouds when we visited. There’s a lift inside one (two actually, but we were allowed to use just one)<\/strong><\/span> of the angled supportive pillars and it takes you up to the observation platform, which is 98 meters above sea level. Trip in a lift to the observation platform takes 42 seconds. Day of our visit was very windy so a person with very delicate balance sense, like moi, can feel every move the tower makes in the wind. You can imagine I was wobbling around on the platform like I was a bit tipsy. View over the town was amazing though. And I have to admit, even though Soviet architecture is mainly pretty ugly, there is a certain lure to it.<\/p>\n
