As odd as it sounds, fabrics actually make needles dull. Pincushion filled with real hair actually helps to keep the needles and pins sharp, but sometimes they still need little bit sharpening. I have tried to find small emery bags here in Finland. I haven’t had any luck. I don’t know what it even would be called in Finnish. Only times I’ve even seen it is with the red tomato shaped pincushion. Not individually. Emery bag is filled with very fine emery powder, the same stuff they use on emery boards. In addition to slightly sharpening the needle tip, it also cleans the surface of the needle, which is damaged by the fats and sweat coming from the skin.

However now I have figured out a replacement for emery bags, the kind you can make yourself. It doesn’t have to be very large, because it’s not used for storing needles, only for sharpening and polishing. Here’s how:

You need:
small piece of thick fabric
fine steel wool, 0000 quality
sewing thread

Cut a small pieces of fabric. You can make sharpening cushion any shape you want, I made cone shaped, because that required as little sewing as possible. I used two layers of thickly woven fabric to prevent fine steel fibers from coming through. Sew the fabric into your desired shape but leave one end open. Put protective gloves on. You should not handle steel wool barehanded (Guess if I realised this. Well no and now I’m waiting when my hands start to tingle…). Take small amount of steel wool and poke it inside the cushion very tightly. You can stuff it with knitting needle to make it really tight. Add small amounts of steel wool enough to make the tiny cushion very dense. It should not give much in when squeezing it. Fill it as full as you can. Then close the open end with hand stitches. You can also attach little ribbon loop for hanging. And it is finished. Easy peasy!

You use the sharpening cushionby poking pins in couple times. Sewing needles you can pull through couple times to give maximum clean. This keeps the pointy ends sharp and removes tarnish.

Teroitustyynyn tulee olla niin pieni että silmäneulan voi helposti vetää kokonaan sen läpi.
