Subject is really wide so I have to divide it in several posts. I don’t know as much about shoes or bags than I know about cloths, but I can give you some pointers. Let’s start with shoes.

Easiest way to separate different decades from each other is to learn to know the design and style of the era. This is easiest to do by reading books about shoe-styles, and not just about designer shoes, but the everyday style people wore. Get to know the shape and style of heels, tips, materials, colours and decorations of the era. Also knowing the manufacturers and their labels might help when trying to determine the age. The older the shoes, the more difficult it is to find them in flea markets anymore. Mostly you can now find 80’s and 90’s shoes, because no-one wants them. On the other hand, online auctions and flea market places might sometimes sell treasures if seller doesn’t know how to time the shoes.

However, here’s a quick and rough description of each era. In the 20’s they really loved ankle straps and t-bars, usually closed with a button. Shoes were usually narrow on the toe (alomond shaped) and had curvy louis heel. In the 30’s shoes became a bit more sturdier on the heel but also very narrow on the ball. They had lots of decorative cuts and broque decorations. Laces and decorative stitching was also popular. In the 40’s also higher heels became sturdy and platforms and wedges became into the fashion. Suede was common material due to leather shortage. Wartime and material shortages affected on the manufacturing of shoes a lot, especially here in Finland. In the 50’s the style went from sturdy 40’s style to high spike heels and very pointy shoe toes. Early 60’s the toes were so pointy and narrow that bunions were common problem. In the late 60’s style was the opposite, heels were bulky and toes were wide and round. Space era inspired to try futuristic materials, so shiny vinyl and genuine patent leather were popular. Shiny white gogo boots were epitome of 60’s shoe fashion. In the 70’s the platos and high bulky heels were back in business. Even for men. Popular colours were shades of brown. In the 70’s it was typical to borrow style from 30’s and 40’s. One reason for this was the very popular movie Great Gatsby, starring Robert Redford.

50’s vs. 60’s
50-luvun lopun tai 60-luvun alun hopeinen juhlakenkä piikkikorolla ja 60-luvun
palkkikorkoinen nahkakenkä leveämmällä kärjellä. /
Late 50’s or early 60’s silver party pumps with pointy heels and 60’s leather
shoes with block heel and wider toe.

During the war, and in Finland even after it was over, shortage of materials was bad. All leather went to the war industry so home front had to manage with other materials. That’s why suede was so common material in the 40’s shoes. During the worst shortage shoes were made of canvas, paper and wood. Unfortunately these shoes were not very durable. That’s why it’s very difficult to find them. Sometimes however, you might bump into them in flea markets, and then they are always deadstock, sometimes even in their original packaging. If you happen to find some, it’s worth to buy one pair just for the curiosity. They are not for everyday use anymore, however you can still use them every now and then, short timeperiod at the time.

The older the shoes, the less likely it is to have artificial materials on them. Already in the 50’s lucite and vinyl were used rather commonly in party shoes (especially in America). However 60’s was the real divider in Finland. The industry changed a lot and traditional handcrafting techniques were replaced by faster industrial gluing techniques and plastic materials. I usually like to think that leather is the mark of quality shoes. And if the sole is leather too, it’s even better. As a general rule I could say that in 40’s and before soles were always made of leather (although there are exceptions like tennis shoes and slippers). On newer shoes, it can be either leather or artificial material. And the more modern it gets, more likely it is to be plastic. In 40’s shoes and older the inner sole and lining could have also been cotton fabric.

Even though I generally think 70’s shoes are still rather good quality, there are one particular style which I find a bit flimsy. Especially the high heel sandals of that era are not very sturdy and feel quite wobbly when walking in them. They usually have both, open toe and open heel and either the heel, the sole or the whole shoe feels very flimsy and wobbly. It doesn’t support the foot at all and walking in them gives rather insecure feeling. So you should always also try walking wearing the shoes before buying, not just try the fit. I can’t walk in those wobbly 70’s sandals at all, especially because the heel is often rather high.

60’s vs 70’s
Kultainen 60-luvun slingback avokas punotulla kärjellä ja 70-luvun
t-remmikenkä platopohjalla ja palkkikorolla. /
Golden 60’s slingback heels with woven toe and 70’s t-bar shoes
with plato sole and block heels.

In the early 80’s more and more faux leather shoes started to come to market. Unfortunately that old faux leather doesn’t handle time very well. If the surface feels a bit sticky, it’s unfortunately had it. This kind of gone-sticky faux leather will gather dust which will be difficult to remove and it will only get stickier and stickier over time. You’re better off leaving them. It’s not possible to repair faux leather that much so when it’s gone, it’s gone. Any attempt to revive it will only be temporary fix. Also if the leathery surface has started to peel, there’s nothing to be done. When you buy vintage shoes, the first thing before using them is to get heel pad replacement. If the heel pad is leather and looks to be ok, it doesn’t need replacement, but plastic tends to deteriorate over time (as you can see here, and again).

If shoes are really old, for example 50’s or older, check the condition of leather in them. If there is little tears on the edges, leather has started to dry and go bad. Small tears are possible to fix but leather needs to be softened before taking them to cobblers. I use Pecard Leather Dressing. It works both for shoes and handbags. Basically all vintage leather shoes should be softened before use (with Pecard or other similar product) so that they don’t start tearing in case leather has started to dry. Sometimes they still look good even though leather has gone dry. And it doesn’t hurt doing the treatment for modern leather shoes either, even though they are usually not yet ruined by the bad storing. Bigger tears might not be possible to fix, so consider leaving them behind. Rusty metal parts like buckles and eyelets are also a hint of dried leather. If you are sensitive to mold, check shoes for moldy spots. Smell of mold can be removed, but there still might be mold spores living inside the shoe.

MAINTENANCE FOR VINTAGE SHOES

Removing odors with soda
Pour some baking soda into jar without lid. Place the jar and shoes in plastic bag. Close the bag tightly and leave for about two weeks. Open the bag and check the odor. Renew the treatment with fresh soda if needed. Do not let the soda touch the shoes!

Dirt and stains
Wipe dirt off with dry or damp cloth (depending on what material shoes are). Do not wet the shoes. Fabric covered shoes might be possible to clean with light stain removal treatment: rub gall soap to damp cloth and wipe the stain with it, repeat wiping with clean damp cloth. This might not always work as stain removal is always tricky thing. For vinyl shoes you can try vinyl treatments from car supply shops. However, always be carefull with chemicals and never spray anything directly to the shoes, but to rag. It’s not recommended but you can also try Magic eraser, but that can damage the surface of patent leather and vinyl. You can also buy leather and suede cleaners from shoeshops or cobblers.

Reviving dry leather
Use beeswax, saddle grease or similar products made for leather care. Spread all over leather even thin layer. Leave to set overnight. Repeat as many times as the leather sucks the treatment in. When the grease/wax doesn’t vanish anymore inside the leather, wipe the excess grease off and polish. Basically all vintage shoes should be treated like this before use, even if they seem to be in good condition. Leather can go dry without looking dry and first use will damage them permanently in that case. Also modern leather shoes benefit from the treatment and last longer.

Heel pads
Plastic heel pads should be replaced before taking any vintage shoes in use. Plastic can look perfectly fine when you buy the shoes and then completely shatter in first use. Loosing the actual heel pad is not such a bad thing, but if you don’t notice it soon enough, walking with shoe without heel pad can cause bad damage to the heel surface and structure.

Foot fungus
If you are afraid on getting any sort of toe- or foot fungus from used shoes, you can treat them with fungus powder or -spray. Those are available in pharmacies. There are also studies proving that UV-light kills fungus spores pretty effectively. I don’t know how likely it is to get fungus from vintage shoes. I have had many pairs in use over the years and I have never ever had fungus from them. I have also never treated any used shoes for fungus.

Vintagen tunnistamis- ja osto-opasta on toivottu postauslistalle.
