Lyhty olikin sitten kovempi pala purtavaksi. En halunnut ostaa oikeaa lyhtyä koska sellaista on painava kanniskella koko illan mukana ja halusin lyhdyn olevan selkeä mukana kulkeva osa asua. Sopiva idea feikkilyhdyn valmistamiseen tuli viimein työharjoittelijaltani: talouspaperirulla.

I have already signed in for this Springs L’Amusette’s masquerade of Thousand and one nights. Last time I didn’t have much time to accessorise my outfit for the actual masquerade theme with anything except mask. This time I thought it might be fun to add something suitable for the theme. One evening at the living history inspiration meeting and with pinterest brought to me to the result of turbans and Persia.

Unlike these days, in 1700’s the fancy costumes were more often just symbolic or created with accessories rather than literal. Sometimes you could just separate them from ordinary garments just by mask or unusual accessories like special kind of hat. So I can build up my chemise gown into proper masquerade costume with just accessories. I chose to my character a Persian Sibyl. Antique Creeks considered sibyls to be some sort of oracles. The symbols for her were serpent beneath her feet and lantern on her hand.

Needed accessories are mask, oriental turban, lantern and snake. I slaughtered one charity shop bargain silk dress for turban fabric. I separated back and front pieces, opened the darts, cut pieces just below the armholes and sewed them together for long “scarf”. And tadah, we got one turban ready. I’m just going to wrap it on my head, secure with couple safety pins and decorate with couple feathers and shiny brooch.

I made the mask gluing black velvet to basic card mask, from my local craft shop. According to paintings from 1700’s, masks used in masquerades at that time were most often black velvet. And when I have this mask, I don’t have to make a new matching mask every year. Snake was put together with gold brocade, beads and metal coins. I baste stitched it on the hem for easy removal later on. The lantern was a bit more hard bit to chew. I didn’t want to buy real lantern because it would be heavy to carry arround all evening and I still wanted the lantern to be part of the outfit, not just decoration on the table. Perfect idea came finally from my work practice person: toilet paper roll. So I made miniature size faux lantern from toilet roll, craft paint, gold paper and plastic film. Mimicking the candle is LED-tea light.

L’Amusetten Tuhannen ja yhden yön tarinoita-maskeraadi on jo tulevana lauantaina.
