Minulla on ollut parina viime vuonna tapana ett\u00e4 itsen\u00e4isyysp\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 postaan valikoituja paloja vanhojen valokuvien kokoelmastani. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa ajattelin valita teemaksi visiittikortit. Ne olivat suosittuja 1800-luvun loppupuolella ja niit\u00e4 oli tapana j\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 muistoksi tuttavien luona vieraillessa, siit\u00e4 nimi visiittikortti. Ne olivat verrattain edullisia ja pienen kokonsa vuoksi my\u00f6s helppoja postittaa kaukaisillekin sukulaisille tai yst\u00e4ville muistoksi. Siksi niit\u00e4 l\u00f6ytyy kirppiksilt\u00e4 paljon, joskus voi jopa l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 samaa kuvaa useamman kappaleen. Tykk\u00e4\u00e4n ker\u00e4ill\u00e4 n\u00e4it\u00e4 silloin kun l\u00f6yd\u00e4n kiinnostavan tai erikoisen kuvan. En kumminkaan koskaan k\u00e4yt\u00e4 n\u00e4ihin paljon rahaa enk\u00e4 osta ihan jokaista vastaan tulevaa yksil\u00f6\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Past couple years I’ve had the habbit on posting selected old photos from my collection on the Finnish Independence day. This time I decided to share some of my visiting cards. Carte de visite were popular at the late 1800’s. People used to leave them as gifts when visiting friends or family, hence the name. They were quite inexpensive and due to the small size they were also easy to post to distant relatives and friends. That is one reason why there is so many still left today, sometimes you might even find several identical cards at the same time. I like to collect these if I find interesting or unusual photo. However I never use much money on the, and I don’t buy every single one I see.<\/p>\n

EDIT<\/strong><\/span> – Me and readers were contemplating in the comments what might be the item hanging on the chain and tucked behind the belt. My mum actually offered quite likely answer: it is probably monocle.<\/p>\n

\nThis is one of my favourite photo, of all old photos I have. There is something very<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\nmystical in it. Three friends, or perhaps sisters even. Why two of them is looking away\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\nfrom camera and one directly towards? Painted clouds on the backdrop give sort<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\nof magical touch to it. It is not traditional visiting card because the photo studio<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\ninformation is missing and it’s cut slightly crooked.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\nPets are not that common in visiting cards either. Here is young gentleman<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\nwith his dog companion. Some photos are badly scratched, like this one.<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\nI tried to clean worst of it. There is unusual, pale lilac hue\u00a0in the photo.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This card is very small for visiting card, only 4,4 x 8,1 cm. Basic size of\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\nvisiting cards is usually 6,5 x 10,5 cm. This miss has very stylish outfit though.<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\nBut I wonder what is that thing hanging from her neck, tucked under the belt?<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I bought this photo because decorations on her dress are especially lovely. I think<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\nthey are made with soutache. It’s easy to create decorative loops with it just<\/strong><\/span><\/em>
\nby pulling the cords inside the ribbon.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I think this might have been in the blog before. It says at the back of the photo,
\nwritten with\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em>pencil “Pray! Fight! Win!”. I’m pretty sure this is Salvation Army soldier.
\nIt’s difficult to\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em>see the decorations on the collar, but bonnet and outfit seem similar
\nto the early 1900’s\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em>Salvation Army uniform. Pose is also quite unusual.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
